I just got an Asus Eee PC1000HD netbook that has a 120GB hard drive. However, it is partitioned into two--60Gig--partitions.
What are the benefits of having 2 partitions like this? I have read some people have reformatted this netbook and made it only one partition.
I can see the only value of 2 partitions might be less time spent defragging a smaller partition. Any thoughts?

What are you using it for? That would help define the benefits for you.
In recording we often partition drives so we can keep one partition as a big empty chunk available for windows (and RB/PT) to use for writing temp files to. It helps the drive to not have to jump around so much.
Another would be to use a partition for backups... keep things organized. For instance I have a second drive in my webwork computer that is partitioned to hold the backups for all the websites I build in one partition, and the other partition is for family related use. That way I know the kids have no reason to be tinkering in the drive with my important backups, but can put their pictures and stuff on the family partition. This two partiton drive is separate from the drive windows runs on, so I can occassionally back up the windows drive there also.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I'm using my netbook for email and internet while traveling and I have my Akoustik Piano software on it for my Roland FP-4. I could keep Windows XP and operating system things on one partition and all my pics, mp3's, wave files, Akoustik files, word docs, and videos on the other partition. The problem with Akoustik Piano is that it must attach itself to the Operating system part of my XP.

Most software will still attach to Windows if installed from the partition it will reside on in the future.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Thanks, that's what I'm finding.
So, it seems that the extra partition is just for extra storage and not essential, but could be useful for certain things.

The extra partition is good to stash the piano samples in, for example, so they are not disturbed when you need to re-establish windows someday.
Your project is really interesting -- is that little PC running your Akoustik Piano without coughing? Is it powerful enough run any effects along with the piano?

My wife has one of those and Band in a Box runs fine if I plug in the external hard drive. I did that to satisfy my curiosity, I'd like to try one with Vista, (Her's has XP) because with vista you can put in a micro SD card and have the computer use that to boost the memory from 1 gig to either 5 or I think 9 gis. I never checked how they partitioned it.
If by some great stroke of fortune the pending Mac version of biab can be compiled to run on Linux/Ubuntu on one of those netbooks, I'm hoping to get one and get that going. I just want to wave adios to Bill Gates once and for all.

Thank you. That's good, welcome news -- although not really startling, because Band in a Box poses little strain. PG Music have prided themselves on keeping it so undemanding that it will almost run on an abacus.
Akoustik Piano is a different matter It lays on some stress. I couldn't grasp whether Joan was successfully playing it yet. I hope she will return to talk as much as possible about how Akoustik runs on the Eee.
The Asus is a lot cheaper and less buggersome than that Receptor thing, so a piano player's eyes light up when he hears somebody has got Akoustik Piano on it..

I'm on my way to Texas right now with my Asus Eee, and my Roland. I'm in Kansas tonight and will arrive on Tuesday in Texas. Once I set everything up I'll get back to you on how it is working.
The AsusEee1000hd netbook can be easily upgraded to a 2gig Ram chip. I might do that in a few months. I'm waiting to see if everything works on the netbook because it loses its warranty if you add extra Ram--doesn't it?

I have heard one unauthoritative opinion -- a purchaser on the New Egg website who said that installing RAM does not void nuthin'. But he did admit he had to dig off some sticker to get at the screws underneath, so you can't do it undetected. AsusTek would tell us if we ask.
The RAM graft was said to be extremely easy to do, equally easy to install a different hard drive.

Partitioning is like cutting a pie in 1/2, 1/4's,1/8's etc...
Having "X" software on "A" side and "Y" software on "B" side will help your PC's resources when using either one at the time. Some people like to run different OS's on their partitions.
I would think having BB on one would help with the load times etc..

I did some test songs with this netbook at home and everything seemed to work fine. I had my midi cable connected to my Roland FP-4, Dell computer speakers attached, and using the internal sound card was able to record a piece.

Hey allis,
Never spoke with you before but I must congratulate you on your turn of phrase above- "less buggersome". Beautifully put, and to Australian ears ranks with "pain in the anal canal" for pithy expressiveness.
I'll be filing that one away for future reference (no doubt in relation to future PC aggravations...)

I finally got settled enough to try out my Akoustik Piano with the Asus EeePC 1000HD. And it works quite nicely. I can use it for recording my pieces and playing back using one of the virtual pianos. Mainly the Hamburg Steinway D.
It doesn't do enough while playing "stand alone" since there is a noticeable lag in playing the notes and hearing the sound. But for what I am doing it is a good traveling computer.
I ordered a 2 Gig Ram chip and will install when it arrives.

And after that, you might try an install of ASIO4ALL on the built in soundcard, may just clear up that latency problem on it for you, allow playing in realtime.

I have a feeling that the 2 gigs of memory will improve performance noticeably, and that using ASIO4ALL, as Mac suggests, may make it quite nice to play.
If you have the time, I hope you can tell us how all that works out, too. You've revived my interest in the Akoustik Steinway. Getting too many VI pianos makes me forget some old friends.

Mac and Allis--I have the Asio4all installed and with the recording functions of Akoustik there isn't a difference. However, I haven't tried it yet in "standalone". Will do that.
