I have installed my BiaB 2010.5 on my new Windows 7 Professional 64 bit machine and am wondering why it installed in the Programfiles (x86) folder (which is for 32 bit software). Is there a BiaB program version that is truely 64 bit or will just run on a 64 bit machine. Also if it is only 32 bit does that mean the 12 gigs of memory that I have on the machine not going to be used in the program?

It has probably been answered but my search showed no specific answer to the above questions. Thanks for any advice. It is appreciated.

These are just things I *think* I recall as being true.

How much RAM is available is determined by the OS, not the program, so it should be able to use all the RAM.

I also believe I have heard that BIAB can also use the multiple processors found in most 64 bit machines.

Hopefully some more techey people chime in.

BIAB is a 32-bit application. There are actually not that many 64-bit applications available for Windows yet, but that of course changes every day as more and more vendors are creating them.

BIAB can use multiple cores from your processor, but that works whether you run the 32-bit version of Windows or the 64-bit version.

You are correct that BIAB won't use 12GB of RAM (32-bit can only address a little less than 4GB); however, BIAB doesn't use anywhere close to 12GB of RAM to run, much less 4GB. The 12GB does give you additional memory for other concurrent applications, however.

Quick question;
That extra memory would only be abailable for 64 bit programs though, right? (since 32 OS bit only addresses 4 gig, well a little less actually)

Bob - yes. And John is right.

Rich - I remember other threads in which people ran into permission problems (UAC - User Account Control) in Vista and Windows 7 by installing BIAB to the Program Files folder (either one, if you have a 64-bit OS). PG Music advised that you NOT install there. Use the default, which is to install in the root of C:.

Thanks for all the replies. They are very helpful.

And Matt... I did miss state the where I put the BiaB software. I did in fact put in the C: root directory and not in Program Files. I was thinking of the Coyote ForteDXi that was installed into the Program Files (x86). That was what led me to question whether BiaB was a 64 or 32 bit program.

I also realize that BiaB does not use much memory but in my case, I sometimes use the Garritan ARIA player and Jazz and Big Band Instruments to do the BiaB performances and they are sampled sounds which use more memory than a synth program like ForteDXi. It is a moot question because BiaB runs perfectly well on my machine. I was just wondering.

Again, thanks everyone for the helpful comments.

The Aria player will run in its own memory space separate from that in which BIAB is running so you should be fine.

That's great to hear John. I hadn't thought about it. The only thing is the ARIA player has to be the 32 bit VST version and not the 64 bit version. BiaB will not recognize the 64 bit version of the ARIA player, so I still only get the 3.4 gigs of RAM to work with. No big deal since it works fine the way it is. (Best leave sleeping dogs lie - or something like that.) :-)

On another note related to ARIA. How do I make changes to controllers stay in the .mgu file. I am running into that problem. I put in CC#1 which Garritan JaBB needs for wind players and GPO needs for string players in order to get the volume level right. When I save the song and reload it, all those CC#1s are gone except on the melody track. I must be missing something here.

Thanks again...

Right. Biab is specifically designed to handle all that for you. Every time you hit play and the song regenerates everything gets overwritten. That's the point of my post earlier talking about using specific synths with their own controllers. You could try freezing the track you've changed but I don't know if freezing saves those controller messages or not. If it doesn't then you're sol with Biab. The reason the melody sticks is you have full control over the melody and soloist tracks but not the individual instruments. This is one of the reasons Real Band was developed. Time to move to RB if the freeze track function doesn't do it.

Also, there's a poster who wrote some scripts for Biab to use with Garritan but I don't know if they help with this exact situation or not. Perhaps he will see this and chime in.

Thanks Bob. That is what I suspected as the regular players in BiaB are regenerated using midi standard CC assignments and such and alas JaBB and GPO use a non-standard version of some of the CCs. I have read some of the info on work-arounds for JaBB but those were designed for the Kontakt Player and I don't think they work in the new ARIA player. I will have to try Real Band and see what happens. I know BiaB says it doesn't freeze midi tracks but is really designed for audio tracks like the RealTracks instruments.

Again thanks for the comments. They are appreciated.
