I currently have internet explorer 9 on my computer. It is very slow compared to Mozilla and the google chrome. The question I have is can you delete internet explorer off the computer and just use one of the other web browsers. I know in times past a lot of web pages would not work correctly on some of the other browsers.

Go to add/remove programs. Select the option to "view installed updates". When the list refreshes MSIE 9 should be there. Then uninstall it.

I use IE9 and Firefox 4 and both work very fast but that could be because I just bought a new Athlon Phenom 6 core with 4 gigs ram. I think the question should be why is it so slow on your machine? If the problem is with your machine not being up to it then you should be able to go back to a restore point before you installed IE9.

Speed can be confused with the amount of cache that each uses. Chrome seems fast to me, but I also know that Google likes to keep all kinds of stuff locally on my machine. I use it nonetheless.

Well, sure, you could uninstall IE, but why bother? With today's hard disk sizes, likely the better choice to simply leave it there but ignore it and use your favorite browser du jour, retaining IE "just in case" for future needs such as checking the view of web content to see if things are the same or something may not be seen with your current browser, etc. - Especially if you use your browser for things such as online purchsing or the purchase/downloading of programs such as Band in a Box, etc. - Usually not a problem, but we still might occasionally encounter a webpage that works and shows everything in say, IE but may not do the same in another browser. Or the other way around, which is rarer, I think, but may happen. But it is painfully obvious to me that many commercial websites use microsoft development tools that are, *ahem* shall we say, optimized for IE.

I would suggest leaving ie9 installed and use the browser you like best.
I have used Firefox for years and like it - BUT, sometimes pages don't show correctly on certain sites for me and reading and navigating are impossible. If I then load the same page in ie, all is fine. So I grudgingly keep ie9 in my Start Menu.
BTW, I have heard ie critics suggest that ie9 is really quite good and proclaim that ie is back in the game.

Installed IE 9 here because of all the hype wrt speed etc.
What a disappointment. I don't even check on its touted speed any more. What's annoying is its compulsary use of these clear type fonts blurring each and every letter of a web site, thus turnig any IE browser session into s.th. comparable to torture - it's a flat show stopper.
Rather stick to tried and true Firefox.

Slim browser uses the same engine as IE which I never use now. I find it's excellent on all webpages and a darn bit faster. I've kept IE in the hard drive but turned off those annoying automatic updates. Computer does seem to run better without IE !

I've used Firefox for years and still do but MS updates require IE and security updates are almost a daily thing. All you guys who still love to trash IE (me too until recently) should read up on it. MS Security Essentials is pretty good according to lots of forums and IE9 is getting pretty good reviews as well. Nothing is static when it comes to computers and software and MS seems to be getting with the program. Finally.
Martin, any problems you're having like that is just like people complaining about Biab. There's something with your system config that needs attention, websites look great on my new machine with IE9. Perhaps your sustem isn't up to running IE9 properly. Maybe it's the pretty strong ATI HD graphics chips built into my mobo. It's about three times the power of my $75 ATI Pro card installed in my old P4 box. I saw a similar P4 2.8 with 2 gigs ram for sale at a thrift shop the other day for $120 OBO. I'm sure they'd take a C note for it. Sigh, I custom built my old machine but time marches on and I'll probably donate it to them unless I want to turn it into a server or something.

If you are running XP, IE9 is not recommended. This from the CNET website:
"Along with IE's new features, though, Microsoft has a clear message for Windows XP users: hurry up and upgrade to Windows 7 already. Microsoft's official explanation for why Internet Explorer 9 doesn't support Windows XP, the operating system that runs on an estimated 40 percent to 50 percent of the world's computers, is that the graphics card-powered hardware acceleration that helps the browser load pages faster doesn't work properly with the device drivers on Windows XP."

I installed IE9 and found it was LUDICROUSLY slow, and every few pages would hang altogether. My PC is quad core i7 using Windows 7 64 bit, super fast so the problem is with IE9. After a few hours I rolled back to IE8. I don't understand why Microsoft has put out such a useless piece of junk.

I'm not sure about this at all -> internet forums are teeming with entries of people complaining about the blurred characters they are seeing with IE9, albeit clear type fonts are deactivated on the OS side. IE8 and Firefox display razor sharp characters, not so IE9. While this *may* be a problem of IE9 with individual systems, I strongly refrain investing a lot of time in system settings hunting, when a lot of people already have done just that and finally give up posting their frustration in pertinent forums.
I just don't understand those Microsoft people seemingly ignoring such a major bug of IE9.

By now everyone should be familiar with the microsoft method - the first release is going to be buggy.
They then issue updates, updates, rewrites of whole sections listed as yet another update, then finally may even come up with a Service Pack.
At some point the software actually works.
So then they will issue some updates that will break it.

OK, just for you guys I'm using IE9 to write this. I have both this forum and the LA Times up in both Firefox 4 and IE9 and they are both virtually identical. The pages load exactly the same as in very fast and if anything the letters and contrast are very slightly better in IE than Firefox. It's mostly in the contrast, the letters and colors are just a slight tad darker and crisper in IE but if I wasn't really looking carefully just so I can report back here I would never notice it. I can't comment on those who are having problems with IE but it's good here.
