Method I use when I run into this -

I select one of the MIDI tracks I want to go to the default synth, right click it and select "Port"
Then scroll down and change the port to port #17 (labeled DXi/VSTi synth 1)
Next assign that port to the desired synth (in your case the Edirol)
This is done in the dropdown menu offered up right away. Use the top slot in the group of four that pop up.

After clicking OK, right click the track again and then click "Assign all midi tracks to DXi synth 1" (or something similar, I'm not looking at it right now)

Then change your default synth in the Preferences - MIDI devices area to the one you want to 'play'.
That should work.
Existing tracks should be forced to a new instance of the Edirol, and new tracks will be heard thru the new default synth.
The DXi synth port assignment over rides the 'reroute all MIDI command' here.

Another option is converting MIDI to audio tracks to preserve the sound (but keeping the MIDI tracks in case of adjustments later).

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome
