I have previously used my Yamaha keyboard to input midi data into PT11. I now have a new PC (with Vista) and PT11 is working OK apart from receivng midi data. When I connect the keyboard the red light on the midi cable lights briefly then goes out. PT11 does not seem to receive any data at all from the keyboard. Under options and midi devices there are no input devices listed so I think this must be the problem. Any ideas as to what I can do?

Many thanks

How are you connecting the midi in?
USB? May need to install a driver.

Hi rharv

Yes I am using USB. I've had a look in the PC's Device Manager and this shows the USB is connected but has a yellow exclamation mark and the message "This device cannot start (code 10)?

Gram,
Most likely the driver that you are using is not compatible with WIndows Vista. What I would recommend doing is going to the website of the manufacturer of the interface, and seeing if they have an updated driver for Vista. Until you clear that exclamation mark in the Device Manager, it is not going to function. If the interface is an older device, and no updated driver is available, you'll need to purchase a new one.

Make sure that you get the right version driver, i.e., are you running Vista 32 bit or Vista 64 bit. The driver has to be the correct one.

It is an old keyboard, it worked fine when I had Windows XP so I think you're probably right and it might have to be a new keyboard with the right version driver for Vista, I'm running Vista 32 bit.

Thanks

It won't have to be a new keyboard, just a new driver for for the USB device that is compatible with Vista..

@gram--

It would help to know the model number of your Yamaha keyboard.

But you can find out for yourself at the Yamaha site under the Support and Download section, see if there are Vista drivers released for your particular synth there and if so, download them and follow the install directions to the letter.

Gram,
You have a separate MIDI interface? Or, is it just a USB cable that goes from the computer to the keyboard? If you have a USB MIDI interface, not just the cable, that is what you need to get the updated drivers for. If the keyboard goes to the computer with just a single USB connection, you'll need to go to Yamaha's website like Mac said and get the drivers there.

Hi All and thanks for you advice

My keyboard is a Yamaha PSS480 and is connected to the computer via a single MIDI-USB cable. I couldn't find anything in the Yamaha support and donwloads section of their website relating to my keyboard, does the MIDI-USB cable require drivers?

Thanks again

According to the Yamaha site online .pdf manual, your keyboard does not have its own USB connection.

It has standard MIDI In and Out only.

If you are using a USB to MIDI adaptor, THAT is what you must find any drivers for if they don't show up automatically.

Also, with USB, it is important to have it hooked up and recognized by the OS before starting any host program that may use the USB MIDI connect.

That's correct Mac, the keyboard just has the standard MIDI in and out connections. Yes I do use a USB to MIDI adaptor, though I've no idea of the manufacturer so updating the drivers may be a problem. I might still have the original packaging somwhere otherwise I suppose I'll just have to buy a new adaptor.

Thanks

Once you do find drivers and install them, you should make sure you use the same physical USB connection each time. Sometimes the OS will ask you to re-install the drivers if you plug it into another spot. Actually, trying a different spot now may yield a surprise.. if it worked at one point in time. The drivers may be tied to a different physical port.

Don't know why, I've just seen it happen more than once.

Yes I know what you mean about drivers being tied to a physical port, unfotunately it didn't work for me this time!

There should be some sort of label or brand name on your USB-to-MIDI device somewhere. At least an FCC ID number...

Can't see any label or number on the USB-MIdI adaptor itself but it might be on the original packaging.
