I play guitar. I like jazz. I tried twice to listen to this, once in the morning and again tonight. I found it absolutely UNBEARABLE! It is however a prime example of what's wrong with a lot of modern jazz. Music has been sacrificed on the altar of speed while the musician shows off their ability of playing at a mind numbing tempo. It's impressive, ...... but it sounds like crap. (The term "tiresome" also comes to mind). There's no feeling or musicality. If the musician throws in 4 bars of this type of playing into a 32 bar solo, it can be used to great effect. If that's all they do, it's repulsive to the ear and the mind. "It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing". (I realize this isn't swing, but it is supposed to be music, ... not a demonstration of scales and arpeggios at light speed). But hey, ... that's just my humble opinion.

Of course you realize, Bob, that this cat has transcribed and is playing Cannonball's solo. Cannonball's never been unbearable to me. It's all about what the ears can decipher. But you're right, definitely not for everybody.

Very well put. My ears can hear the scales and arpeggios but they can’t hear the music.
When I think of jazz guitar, I think of Joe Pass, George Benson, Johnny Smith ...
Those guys could mesmerize you with their playing. All substance with a few occasions of flash!

Bob, I tend to agree with you. There IS a point to melody. I've never really dug that type of jazz, where it seems like there isn't a point to the melody - to lead someone somewhere.
For example, when I listen to Coltrane, I'll take 'Naima' and 'Like Sonny' over what happens after the intro to 'Giant Steps'.
I also have a recording of Trane of 'My Favorite Things' where the 1st half of the song is delightful, and then the 2nd half of the song is just a plain mess. It would be like David Gilmour doing his classy signature lead lines and then the 2nd half of a song, he does guitar pick scrapes and Eddie Van Halen style tapping for no apparent reason like your average neighborhood Guitar Center frequenter.
With all of that said - I'm still impressed by the guitarist in the original link transcribing the randomness of the Cannonball Adderly sax solo into a guitar interpretation.

Horrible - not only because its cannonball but also its very sloppy articulation, no feel and utterly pointless - why on earth learn, verbatum, what another guy, on another instrument, delivered in the spur of the moment?
Flashy, egotistical, thoughtless, pointless, and sloppy.
I can't stand this 'how many notes can I get into a bar' playing.

I'd never heard of Jeff Golub, but after looking at his bio, it's obvious that I have heard him as a band member.
I checked several YouTube vids of him and he's a very good guitarist. He plays with lots of expressiveness
and feeling.
Thanks for the heads up. I've added several of his songs to my favorites.

most of the other guys were constructive and honest with their opinions but yours are just plain silly and naive....
"why on earth learn, verbatum, what another guy...." i'll tell you why, it will do WONDERS for your ears not to mention chops

then you're asking for some pretty stern critiques. "Superhuman ??? You've been warned ???" Your opening sounded like a hawker at a circus side show that says "Prepare to be amazed!!!!!!"
I remember the first time I heard "Prepare to be amazed !!!!!!" was when I was a kid at a carnival where I paid 25 cents to see the hermaphrodite. I guess I was a little amazed, but I couldn't finish eating my corndog & cotton candy after that! 
I guess the guy should be commended for putting the time and effort into learning to play something this annoying. It would have to take a lot of work to sound that bad.
But if it sounds good to you, ...... enjoy. But if it sounds awful to a few others, ..... that doesn't mean they are "silly and naive".

my fault. i had quite forgotten where i was for a moment.....a place where folk get machines and softaware to play their music for them...i shoulda known better

I prefer for Oliver Gannon, Terry Clark and Neil to drop by gratis and back me up while I played the piano all day.
As it is just my playing Peel Me a Grape for 4 hours can get boring so I get a backup band.
Is there harm in that?
Does it make us less than someone else?
Perhaps you can spring me some cash so the wife can quit work, she plays with me, then I need the backup mechanical band less. If you feel so inclined the Colonsay lass will be more than happy to quit leaving me at 7 a.m. and coming back at 6.
If you take stuff personally here ye canna last.
I didn't even listen to it, and from the comments don't want to. Guitars are not high on my list, unless you want to use one for a campfire. I used to like fiddles but they go beyond my hearing range so I'll throw them in for good measure, though a Viola would be better, more wood.
Good thing my dentures are in the dish, it's way more comfortable to put my tongue in my cheek and chomp on it.

Transcribing the solos of others is the beginning of being able to create your own solos that have everything involved, melodic, going someplace, tension, release.

I once went to Guitar Center where some guy was sitting on an amp playing a Les Paul and hammering the neck with the right hand like a man possessed. When he stopped to breathe I said "Cool. Can you show me a b flat major 7th?"
He glared at me and gave me a 2 word obscenity that rhymed with "truck zoo".
Moral of the story: Being able to play a lot of notes really fast does not make you good.

Vishnu - on my listening its just rattled off no emotional connection - fast yes but mechanical. Thats what I mean when I say its not articulated, the timing is basically there but the expression is not - for me.
Maybe I was too strident in saying why copy a perfomance on another instrument verbatum? I have done some transcriptions myself of sax soloes (on sax) I have dropped this all now in favour of going my own way and I find this does my ears a lot of good too. I learnt classical trumpet too and could not play a note unless it belonged to someone elses thinking - since trhen I swore never to go that route again. I like parrots but dont want to be one. Maybe I am radical about this, ah well...
