An example is Satin Doll that someone mentioned. The classic intro for that tune is a G pedal bass on 2 and 4 underneath the chord changes for 4 bars. The actual bass instrument is whatever you want. If you set it up using an acoustic RT, then it's an acoustic pedal bass, fingered electric bass same thing. It's used a lot for intro's or a vamp between verses, etc.
