Hi, I was wondering is it possible to record yourself singing a melody and BIAB to find the chords for this melody? Also when I try and record my voice, it keeps on playing a song or style in the background, I don't know how to get rid of it so that all I record is my voice.

Thanks,
Alex.

Hi Xander - welcome the the forum.

//Also when I try and record my voice, it keeps on playing a song or style in the background, I don't know how to get rid of it so that all I record is my voice. //. You can turn off the sound from the BIAB Instruments by right clicking on "Combo" in the upper left of the main screen and selecting "Mute"

//is it possible to record yourself singing a melody and BIAB to find the chords for this melody?//. Not easily. BIAB can take a whack at this in midi. In audio, it can use the Audio Chord Wizard, but that will work poorly with a monophonic source (your voice). So I'd say no. We'll see what others say.

It looks like you are new to BIAB. I suggest you start out with the fundamentals like inputing chords, styles, melodies, etc. There are lots of great videos and good help files. Also get familiar with the differences between midi and audio. And use this forum. A lot of knowledgeable and helpful people are here to help.

Good luck

Hi Alex,

Welcome to the forums.

Kelso is correct in that Band In A Box (BIAB): (a) can put chords to a MIDI melody but the chords would only be a starting place and would need tweaking; (b) cannot put chords to an audio melody with a great deal of accuracy other than using the Audio Chord Wizard.

Realband, on the other hand, might be able to help.

In Realband, it would be possible for you to record your voice only. It would be necessary to sing in time against a drum beat because, ultimately, if you want BIAB to harmonize the melody, it has to be synched to a tempo. To set this up, all that is needed is to load a style - a MIDI style would be easiest. Once the style is loaded, simply set the tempo and mute all instruments except the drums.

Once you've recorded your vocal, it could then be run through the option "Pitch to MIDI convert" (see image below, about halfway down the menu).

The Pitch To MIDI converter will attempt to convert your vocal to a MIDI melody. I suspect that the results would vary a great deal because aspects such as the sound of consonants and vowels could confuse the interpretation process.

If you do manage to get a successful MIDI file at the end of process, this MIDI could then be saved and read into BIAB. BIAB would then attempt to harmonize the notes with chords.

While the above sounds like it should be possible in theory, I anticipate that obtaining good results could be difficult. As I haven't tried it, though, I cannot say so with certainty.

Kind regards,
Noel

There was a microsoft program that used Band in a Box for the basic engine, that would let someone sing a song into a recording and then it would create the chord accompaniment for it.

It is called, "Songsmith".

I don't know if it is still available, do a websearc for the word and see.

Isn't that the one with happy or jazzy sliders ? Think there is a free demo at their site.

Songsmith sounds like fun, but I'd question if it can create "the" chord accompaniment for a song. How about "One Note Samba"?

I purchased Songsmith when it first came out (19.95, I think) It does set up chords for a single note melody. Perhaps needs a little adjustment afterward, but it does work. and You can use BIAB midi styles directly with it. Neat program. I also updated it a few months ago no charge.

Yup, the Demo last for 6 hours of run time, so you can use it for 6 hours total, then it disintegrates like a Mission: Impossible episode....Just Kidding!!!!

A friend was talking about it, and claims that this error message came up....

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but whatever freakin' notes you're trying to sing are well beyond the capability of this software. Application closing, and running for it's life."

Which is one reason I don't try it!
