Best singer in USA for what?

Opera, rap, rock, country, etc. Male, female, group?

Precisely.

While I think we can legitimately dissociate 'classical' forms of music (opera...) from more contemporary forms, that still leaves a range of genres so wide that no one can really excel across the board.

To compare say Daryl Hall as a pop-soul singer with say Keith Whitley – essentially a country singer – is ultimately asking people to say which of these two broad categories they prefer.

It may be more reasonable to split this thread into sub-threads
(metal, swing, blues, electro-pop…) – and subsititue “who is your favourite…” for “who is the best….” unless we can come up with unambiguous, accepted, measurable and quantifiable citeria against which we are defining “best”.

Even then, we should specify if we are including only living singers (which would, of course, rule out Whitley)

Having said all of the above, Eastside Eddie has a point….

There is no discussion wiggle room, Walter Ostenak!

OK, the Smenge Brothers were up there but John Candy died and they aren't on the scene ya know.

Oh sorry Walter is Canadian. And it said from the US eh?

It would be difficult to find any better voice than that of Eva Cassidy. Check out her doing the "Tennessee Waltz". Rumor has it that she was discovered in England many years ago at some function where she sang "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" better than Julie Garland.

Tennessee Waltz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v1TD-7k52y4

Somewhere Over the Rainbow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccCnL8hArW8

Of course, we lost her at age 32 to cancer.....what a singer!!

Oops, come to think of it, I believe Eva Cassidy was probably from the UK....not the USA, so I guess she's disqualified from the running here.

I have that movie and laugh every time I watch it like it was the first time seeing it. When I was a little kid, I was so small when I started music (before age 5) that they started me on the accordion. It went from a C up one octave to an E, and had 8 bass buttons. That was all my hands, what at that age had NO span, could handle.

That was 55+ years ago, and I still have that accordion. I will never let it go.

Eva was genuine US citizen born in Oxon Hill and raised in Bowie, Maryland, kind of close to Washington DC.

Had the pleasure of meeting John Candy in Nawlins one day, one of the funniest 2-3 minutes I have ever experienced. It went like this:

My best friend and I, walking down Bourbon Street along with our wives, doing the "local tourist” thing one day.

John Candy steps out of this shop and literarily runs right into us.

My friend looks Candy right in the face and starts snapping his finger and stammering in frustration trying to remember Candy’s name.

Candy sees the frustration in my friend’s face and blurts out JOHN CANDY! My friend blurts out RIGHT!

Now John Candy starts stammering and snapping his finger in what was surely contrived frustration, as he did not have a clue who he was speaking to, my friend blurts our GEORGE ELBERT! John Candy blurts out RIGHT! They hug one another and each go their own way.

I had to be picked off the sidewalk!

eva cassidy's "fields of gold" gives me goose flesh. it's a wonderful love song.

alison krouss has that same affect on me...a divine voice...sweet, yet powerful.

nana mouskouri is in that same class but she's not from the u s of eh. she's greek and perhaps the most recorded female vocalists ever.
http://www.last.fm/music/Nana+Mouskouri/+videos/+1-8xOmZo1qXMQ several full songs

most sopranos hitting and sustaining a high "c" or above can light my fire though.

emmylu harris had that gift also.

My daughter .. you just haven't heard her yet ... well most of you.

I’ve heard her, and there’s no doubt the girl can sing! She’s a very pretty young lady too, and that has never hurt a performers career.
……………………………………………………………………………….

I’ll give my vote for 3 categories:

Female: Country/Bluegrass – Alison Krauss
Male: Country/Bluegrass – Vince Gill
Female: Pop – Christina Aquilera (when she can remember the words)

OK, all kidding aside. I don't know when it was recorded, but I just heard Pat Boone, dressed all in leather, singing Deep Purple's "Smoke On The Water"
He used a horn section for the signature riff.
I have no words to decribe it. Maybe disturbing. I'm sure someone bought the album just for the Cover.

It could have been worse, red.

They could have paired Pat Boone with William Shatner...
