Sarahs Brightman and McLachlan come to mind . . . Offhand I can't think of an American male who can touch Thijs van Leer from the Dutch group Focus, but it's late (I work third shift).

Best singer in USA for what?

Opera, rap, rock, country, etc. Male, female, group?

The best "anything" is about as meaningless as it can get. For Formula One racing, one of the current "best" are the Red Bull machines, but they'd be worse than useless at NASCAR.

I see this question on the Pianoworld forum "what is the best grand piano". Although the world class ones are very similar and competitive (Steinway, Bosendorfer, Schimmell, Bluthner, Yamaha, Fazioli, Stuart, Kawai, Steingraeber, Estonia, etc), the choice is subjective even in this narrowly defined field.

My daughter .. you just haven't heard her yet ... well most of you.

I was being serious ... she's my ace, just another year or so to let her decide if this is what she wants to do. I have never heard better pitch, nor such a crystal clear voice.

I *may* be biased but I don't think so.

SilverJohn Keith was great, but i would add traditional country style, he was not a per se great vocalist, but a wonderful singer/storyteller.

Whitney Houston used to be the best singer that's ever been. I'm hoping she'll make it back.

Someone mentioned Keith Whitley. At the end of 'Do you think of me' his slur there (or whatever is the correct name for that) is the best that's ever been.

Well if we're going to equate great technique as the judge then nothing would touch a classically trained opera singer.

As far as children are concerned it will take a lot to beat out little Jackie Evancho.

Country singer, Merle is my favorite. Of course Tony Bennett for swing and pop is no slouch. Just too subjective to call one the best over the rest, I guess it's all personal opinion.
