OK Here's an update to my Ketron SD 2 story.
My girlfriend bought it for me for christmas on e-bay from a dealer called Italmelodie in Canada. It came up as best price so she bought it.
I attempted to update it( that was a bad decision) and followed the instructions word for word. The unit subsequently broke and I had to send the unit back to Italmusic in Canada, because Ketron USA did not want to help me .They told me Ital Music in Canada deals with ketron directly and the don't want to get involved.
So Italmusic told me the main chip on the cirquitboard got fried during the upgrade procedure and since there is a disclaimer on the ketron.it website I would be responsible for the repair.
They did agree to pay for the labor of installing the new cirquitboard and the shipping back to me but I would be on the hook for 60.- for the parts.
So what can i do,I gave them the goahead and hopefully I'll get the unit back soon.
But here's a new thing.
I'm in the US and got it through Purolator freight which is linked to UPS here in the states.
A couple of weeks ago I received a bill from UPS for 27.- which was approximately what the freight was that Italmusic already collected as part of the purchase.
yesterday I received another bill this time with a late charge so I called Italmusic and was told that these charges are Customs fees and that I would be responsible for those.
I called e-bay customer service to confirm that, because my girlfriend told me there was no disclosure of that fact.E-Bay told me that Italmusic is under no obligation to post that there are customs fees payable by the buyer and that indeed I am on the hook for those fees.
So this has been an alaround bad experience and for whatever it is worth:
Don't buy a Ketron from outside of the US and if you do be aware of the Customs fees.
Be aware that the unit can break during an update and that you might not get much assistance when that happens.
Had I bought it from Mac I probably would be much happier now but at this point I wish I had bought the Roland unit.A little more money but probably a lot less trouble.

Sorry to hear all that.

If it is any consolation, I know a fellow who has an equal horror story about a returned Roland SonicCell. He is now a happy SD2 owner.

This is still a dealer problem. I beware of ebay these days, it ain't what it used to be.

Hi Mac,
So far e-bay has been good for us but I'll be much more careful especially if something comes from Canada. This customs thing was really unexpected.
Oh well, I guess it was just my turn to have some bad luck. When the SD 2 was working it sounded very nice, better than Bandstand which I'm currently using.
So when (if) I get it back I won't mess with it and I'll probably be fine.

Hi Gimmeagig,

In the UK when I had an SD2 I had three breakdowns with it and the dealer had problems getting a response from Ketron so I gave it away and bought a SonicCell

In contrast I dropped the unit at a gig and it stopped working - I sent it back to Roland and they sent a brand new one by return which I certainly did not expect

Anything made in Canada or the US goes through customs free. Free Trade eh...

But stuff made outside Canada..Us....Mexico is subject to customs.

Customs happens when stuff arrives in your country, but usually if the product is properly marked as a return or warranty repair you already paid the freight so to speak and are exempt.

I deal with Montreal all the time and for a non french speaking person that can be a challange. The language of business in Montreal is about 99 percent french, so unless you are able to speak french you can get odd results. As a friend of mine asked ..what is a light lunch, and how do you eat it...

I got my Ketron from pgmusic and it is awesome......I just wish they would integrate the patch map and write some styles for the thing, that would be a huge selling point...and they could make a deal with Mac to flog it to US customers for a consideration.....

I hooked pgmusic up with Ketron USA, John. I do not make any money from the deal, though. Just thought the pgmusic users would benefit from having that kind of access to the thing.

Hi

This custom thing is something that can catch you out in the Uk when you buy something in the US they put the price on the green slip in Dollars when it enters the UK they read it as pounds and then add 17.5% vat so by the time i receive it it has jumped to double the price and you have to go to the depo to collect it,although with the pound falling against the dollar it won`t be long before its equal so then it won`t matter

By the way what was the update and is it essential
regards Dave Hoskins

Wow Mac and I thought you were the ultimate capitalist that would not do anything unless there was a buck in it. Guess I was wrong, again, or still, depending on if you ask my wife, cause I do not need that, we are not going there, I am doing it all wrong, and I am totally lost, until I turn into the driveway and she mutters, just lucky is all.....
