Hi All, I'm experimenting with BIAB 2011.5 MegaPak

I definitely want to change real tracks within a song. I have found that it's possible in the chord sheet (as long as you don't try it on measure 1 (the main style will overwrite your change). It seems like the support for this is in it's infancy. The song gets confused quickly and unless you create a separate document, it's hard to remember what realtrack is playing at a given time. Nothing on the chord sheet tells you. The only way I have found to recover the information is to select the measure where you made the realtrack change and select [bar settings] [realtrack], and there it is.

One option might be to make your own real track styles. PG's web page says, ”Choose from pre-made Band-in-a-Box Styles, or combine RealTracks instruments to make your own band.”... Well this isn't going well.

There doesn't seem to be any support in style maker for real tracks. The manual says to hit the misc button in style maker to see what real styles are assigned in a real style. I don't see it. Does anyone else use stylemaker to make real bands?

The other possibility may be the hybrid style creator. But that seems buggy, I can hybridize bass and drums from other styles, but as soon as I bring in any other realstyle, the resulting band seems to revert to midi only. And this would be only marginally useful in the case where the source styles have conflicting use of instruments. Has anyone had luck with this?

Is anyone creating real styles, or does everyone use the same band all the way through the song? Am I missing something?

Some of us do these things later in the process using Realband. You can try out any realtrack on any section of the song..
Those of us that do that will get the style set (basicly) in BiaB and the chords written out, then open the BiaB file using Realband. More intuitive for some users and you sound like you may be one of those users.

Taking nothing away from BiaB, mind you. It does some things much better and faster than RB, but for this type of workflow you described I think you'll like it. Came free with BiaB

Thanks for the quick response rharv.

Actually I have an old version of BIAB if I want to work in MIDI. I was hoping to compose while hearing the improved fidelity of realtracks. It has a psychological effect on me and I think better. For one thing, I don't change chords as frantically if the sound is pleasant, I just hang on the chord and enjoy the feeling. Either that or I lack imagination.

So, does anyone know how to make real styles as PG seems to claim on their web pages??

I meant we don't bother trying to create a 'style' per se, we just use whatever realtracks we want at any point in a song regardless of so called style being used. Thus combining realtracks to make our own realband

I can understand wanting to have a STYLE of particular instruments that you can retrieve at any time for another song. Piece of cake.BTW you have to make the style in BIAB

1.Styles/Style Maker/New-Make a New Style
2.Give it a name and location and save-The style maker screen will now open
3.Click on MISC
4.Bottom left check off to use RealDrums
5. Click RD button
6. Choose the RD you want to use.
7.click MORE
8.Below "Assign Soloist[MIDI] or Real Tracks[Audio] to style" are 2 drop down menus
9.In the first drop down assign what slot in BIAB you are assigning the RT to.
10. In the next drop down assign the RT you want to that slot.
There seems to be a little issue I just discovered. The RTs should be a different color from the MIDI but they are not. RTs start at 361.
11. repeat 9&10 until finished
12. click OK
13.Click OK
14. Click SAVE or SAVE AS.
It's best to save into the bb folder as then in the STYLE PICKER you can add your SYLE to a USER made CATEGORY for easy recall. If you don't want to do that it'll show up in OTHER STYLES

Thanks for the help gentlemen. Silvertones, your “step by step” advice is spot on. If this is in the manual, I sure can't find it (except for that reference to the MISC button).

One related question: when I import a RealDrum style, playback is spotty. Sometimes I hear nothing except the clickoff. Sometimes I hear the correct RealDrum style, but only on the first pass through a repeat, then silence. Do I need to do anything else like play around with the weightings?

This causes a lot of confusion. Real Tracks Styles are not Styles at all in the traditional sense.

A standard midi style is a style that can be written note for note and given the weighting that tells Biab how to play that style. This is the main reason Bob Norton won't write his styles for Real Tracks because you can't use them to create note for note specific licks like you can with a midi style. RT's are prerecorded audio files and the regular style making functions have no effect on them. RT "Styles" are really just demos of what a certain combination of RT's can sound like and as we all know we can mix and match them any way we want. The only thing you have control over with a combination of RT's is the tempo and key sig. They're prerecorded so no Style making is involved.

Someone posted a good way to keep track of these combinations. Create a simple 8 or 12 bar demo song using a given set of RT's and name it whatever you want. Since it's a song not a Style you're not restricted to the cryptic Style naming convention. The name can tell you exactly what it is and then save those songs in a separate directory. Call it RT Styles if you want but again, they're not Styles at all. When you open one up delete or overwrite the chords you used originally and remember to do a "save as" with a new name.

Bob

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
