There is a song about an Indian boy and an Indian girl who live on different sides of the river and they fall in love. She wants to be with him and he wants to be with her. So they swim this great river to be together but the swim exhausts them both and they drown in the middle. It is a song from the 50s or 60s. Anybody know what it is called?

Thanks

I remember the storyline, but not the title or hook. I'm sure someone will remember it.

Does anybody happen to know any other songs that might please a Cherokee woman? I would appreciate knowing. Thanks

I don't plan to play these songs for her personally, just put them on her wall on FaceBook... I have no gigs planned or booked at this moment. Times have just been too hard for me lately and I have had absolutley NO motivation

Running Bear, Johnny Preston, about 1960, remember it on the radio in the kitchen, I think that was grade 5 in school. Mom left that radio on from dawn to dusk. The all american family, she wore an apron and baked pies and dad took the 57 plymouth with the wings and push button transmission to the law office where there were more books than carbon paper.

Ha.

FYI Johnny Preston was on the plane with Buddy Holly. He should have taken Greyhound.

Here's another one, Sam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGtlXzsg59U

And don't quit.... I have a cartoon showing a little birdie on a branch, saying, "I don't sing because I'm happy.... I'm happy because I sing."

I'd be careful about the choice of "Running Bear" these days, some Native Americans may view that one as a bit derogatory. Maybe not.

Cherokee Nation as done by Paul Revere etc. -- This one would be an easy translation to one guitar and singer for you. Downstrokes are us, make it sassy and you could use all barre chords actually.

Cher's :"Half Breed" *might* qualify...(Male singer would have to change the 1st person to 3rd, of course, easily done

REDBONE - A Native American rock band that enjoyed chart successes, may have a tune or two you could use:

"Come and Get Your Love" - Redbone!

"Wounded Knee" -- We were ALL wounded at Wounded Knee...

I've always included "Little Wing" in such a show. You don't have to be Jimi or Stevie to pull this one off nicely, a folk guitarist can emulate Tuck and Patti's wonderful version with simplified playing - while Tuck 'n Patti made a medley of Castles Made of Sand plus Little Wing, I've just done the Little Wing part of the thing for something like you have to do:

Castles Made of Sand/Little Wing

John:

Actually it was the writer of the song - J.P. Richardson aka The Big Bopper - that died in the crash.

Preston apparently died recently:

I'd add any songs by Canadian Cree, Buffy Saint Marie, especially, "Indian Cowboy", and Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee"

"Navaho Rug" by Canadian Ian Tyson.

"Redwing"

if she's at all interested in fiddle tunes, "cherokee shuffle" is a classic fiddle piece.
