Check out some of the 80s-era Britpop styles, too. Lots of good synth keyboard, bass, and string lines in there. Play with the Combos. Mute the cheesy MIDI guitar lines and bask in synthy goodness. Lots of good stuff in GM alone. Bring it out to a nice soft synth or quality hardware module and you've really got something.

Sometimes I'll go with a MIDI drum part, i.e., obviously synthetic. Sometimes I'll port it into Reason and get some good-quality drum samples cooking. I need to dig into Real Band now and start working with multiple drum parts. The possibilities are tremendous.
