if i open up a plugin editor window and start playback, closing the editor will cause the audi to break.
this sorta reminds me of the old HEEHAW joke:
person 1 : "I broke my arm in 3 places!"
person 2 : "Well, DON'T GO to those places!"

Win 7 has shown to be a very stable capable OS for audio, and there are a lot of folks using Windows DAWs these days, even in pro studios.
On Sonar i get 4ms latency with no issues and the same is true of Reaper and MTS, RB and PTPA are right there. They do not handle my ASIO driver as well, but it is still very solid.
I am actually happy to hear you say that.
But can you say whether those low latency figures are with WDM or ASIO ? and what kind of buffer sizes are we talking about here ?.
I do find it strange though that even now it seems to be the case that a lot of people end up using a third party API and driver combination - ASIO instead of advocating the OS’s own.
In the OSX world I know of no-one advocating a move to a different driver/audio API model - or fo that matter MIDI API /driver model. Everyone goes for the OS standard - CoreAudio and CoreMIDI.
Why is there still so much complexity in the windows world ?
But i accept your comment about RB programming being the bigger issue.
for what its worth, i’ve ended up going back to my Mac OSX system for music making. I REALLY REALLY wanted RB ( on windows bootcamp ) to work for me - or to put it bluntly - just work.. But for me it just wasnt ready for “prime time”.
Hope it gets there. Ive posted a ton of wishlist suggestions. Maybe say in a years time - if many of those things come to pass i’ll give RealBand a second go, since the concept behind Realband is such a good one.

I have used both WDM. and ASio, and they work great. I get low latency with both. I use Reaper, Sonar, Multitrackstudios, RB, PTPA, BiaB, and XYZ. they all work very well.
RB is a good little DAW, it is no where as sophisticated as Cubase, or Sonar. It is young! But it does works nice, and you can get it to do a great job. All Daw software needs to advance and grow. A few years back Cakewalk as i mentioned above had a serious motorboating issue. These things take years to become sophisticated. If you read the forums, Logic, Protools, Cubase, Sonar, Reaper, RB, PTPA, Abelton, all have some issues. They all have complaints. In my 15 years of learning this stuff, i have found that 85% of it is user error.
Running windows software on a dual boot system while it is a basically solid setup, it is never going to be as solid as a win only system for PC software. If you are wanting top flight DAW features on a Mac, stay in Logic or Cubase. Use BiaB for the scratch pad.
Why so much complexity in the Windows world? Well think about it, there is 30 times the software, and hardware options. Apple system are all the same part, and have a selected software options list. It is a small percentage of the computer world. Targeted, and expensive. PC are on every desk, table, and counter accross the world, they are made to handle every possible situation. The software vendors never know what hardware and configuration you will have. WDM is a decent driver mode, and can be setup to work very well. I have know users for years that swear by it, getting very low latency.
Your Mac is not optimised to work with windows software, even though you dual boot it. It is optimised to run OS software. So running windows is still going to be a little bit buggy.
HP Win 11 12 gig ram, Mac mini Sonoma with 16 gig of ram, BiaB 2025, Realband, Reaper 7, Harrison Mixbus 9 32c , Melodyne 5 editor, Presonus Audiobox 1818VSL, Presonus control app.

No, no, no man. You're giving up way too soon. It's obvious you're a Mac guy and that's fine, Mac's are killer machines but so is a Win 7 machine. Don't get hung up on CoreAudio/CoreMidi. A super geek can say it's more elegant to have it built into the OS but really who cares as long as it works? All the hardware mfg's for Windows have their own ASIO and they all pretty much work perfect. As soon as you plug in your USB interface for the first time, the ASIO gets installed and that's it. Who cares at that point if it's ASIO or CoreMidi? My ASIO works fine for live playing with RB. RB itself works fine with no probs at all with one glaring exception: VST implementation concerning tempo locking. This may or may not be a big issue with you. I have Jamstix. In addition to it being a very good drum sound module, it also can create it's own drum grooves. It's the creating of the drum grooves that RB does not support and it's very annoying to a lot of us. Using JS as a drum module to play prerecorded midi drum/percussion parts works fine and so does almost all of the VSTi's out there plus all the different effects plugins except those like some delays that need to lock to the tempo of your song. Like my drum groove creating example, those delay effects that need to lock tempos with the host don't work either. Yes, it's an issue and yes it's been talked about here and in the Wishlist for years. Other than than RB is great and that one thing is no reason to give up on the program.
RB is a killer program. What other DAW allows you to have a project consisting of several midi parts plus several audio parts and then you decide something is missing so you create a few Biab tracks to spice things up? That is an awesome feature. Using Jamstix I can play a Biab created midi drum part and it sounds absolutely killer. That along with several Real Drum parts carefully mixed together to form one good drum track is a great way to come up with very realistic computer generated drum/rhythm/percussion tracks. Same thing with all the other instruments, if you're a guitarist and need some piano rhythm tracks, RB will create one for you using all the thousands of Biab midi styles plus all the piano Real Tracks. None of this has anything to do with ASIO. The only time ASIO comes up is with mixing delays like Eddie talks about or live playing of softsynths delays and for me at least ASIO works fine for those things.
