but when it isn't affiliated with your bank, there's still the issue of getting the money onto the card.

Hi Pat - Actually that's what I did. My bank didn't have it, so I went to one that did. (I know - diff system here but....)
In this case (e.g.) the Bank of Montreal offered the prepaid service thru MasterCard. I didn't have to open a chequing or savings account. There was a small initial fee.

I put money into the prepaid (minimum top-up $100 though) via my own bank's on-line "bill paying" - the prepaid bank gets listed as one of my bill payers - a great feature.

Does that sound like something you might be able to do? Sure convenient. If you have $$

Mick, good one.

Did he ask for a refund?

LMAO!

Yo Mick . . . I hope it did not lower the thief's credit score too much. You are going to have to work on improving that identity if you want to once again be a target.

That's really weird, Pat. I've used PayPal for years, and if I've got money in the PayPal account it takes immediately from that, and if I happen not to have enough in the PayPal account it takes immediately from the bank account it's tied to, so I have no idea what's going on. I take it you've tried calling Customer Service, as opposed to just trying to sift through their online support...?

Hi Tom,

I think the main problem is I just don't understand how it works yet. During my first attempts I had not transferred any cash to paypal yet, I think that's why it failed.

Nope, didn't call by phone. Couldn't find a phone number.

However, I just transferred some money to PayPal (message tells me it won't be available for 3-5 business days) After its available, I'm assuming I will be able to make transactions at online vendors. That works for me, as it keeps me from making rash purchases. If I transfer the money to PayPal today and still feel like making the purchase 5 days later, then I'm covered. If not, then it may be good that I had to wait

Apparently if I link to a card I can make purchases without any delay

MOST of what I want to buy online is planned in advance and won't matter if I wait until the transfer clears

Hm. Likely a combination of two things, then -- not having money in the PayPal account, and not specifically authorizing the bank account to immediately cover the PayPal account. You can handle both of those in your account settings, I do believe.

And the phone contact is indeed there, but they make you dig a bit. It's part of the Contact Us pages, and when you click on Call Us, they take you to a page where you log in and get both the phone number and a PIN to give them over the phone. I can only guess the idea is to cut down on calls.

if you google something like 'paypal rip-off' or 'paypal fraud' you will find thousands of pretty awful stories.

Perhaps, but that’s how the Internet works (and indeed how all media work).

Guy buys a couple of printer cartridges. Pays by Paypal. Cartridges show up 3 days later and his credit card has been debited with the right amount to an address which corresponds to the seller.

Is he going to post a blog on the Internet. ‘Paypal works and is actually rather convenient’ ?

But this is what happens over millions of transactions.

It is only the errors/frauds (real and attempted)/glitches etc. which show up on the www.

Question you have to ask yourself is how many regular successful transactions take place for every horror story.

There is risk attached to the use of every type of exchange – even cash (you may get mugged walking to the store).

I would argue that, on balance, Paypal is among the safer forms of payment.

And no, I have no connection or interest in this operator.

He must be related to the guy who stole everything from Stephen Wright's apartment and replaced it with identical stuff.

In fact--if he took your identity, how do you know it's still you?

I had over $100 taken from my bank via skype through paypal, I wasn't even using skype and ahve vowed NEVER to use it ! I got my money back within 5 days.
Must say it's the only problem I've had in 6 years or so. Use paypal almost weekly buying from Amazon

No one remembers the big Pay Pal scandal a while back!?! Pay Pal has been hacked, and used for dishonest purposes. I had a friend who was ripped by pay pal, when he bought a microphone on line and it came damaged.

I have talked with many who have had serious issues. I ask the question is Pay Pal safer to allow to have your credit card info, or is a bank?

You could make a case either way.

2 things I can add:

1. I feel very safe using my Credit Card for on-line purchases. A few times I had unauthorized purchases on my card, I called VISA and they made me sign a simple affidavit to say it wasn't me, and they immediately refunded the money. Another time I was going to buy something from Russia, and I was a bit leary, so I called VISA to check the vendor out... all they told me, if they accept VISA, "go ahead and don't worry.. if anything goes wrong it is our (VISA's) responsibility..."

2. I use PayPal too whenever a vendor prefers it. I usually use my credit card, BUT I also use my chequing account. Howver, YOU HAVE TO HAVE YOUR ACCOUNT VERFIIED before you use it for the FIRST time... it takes a bit of time, but make sure you follow their instructions.... Otherwise it's always instant, and the vendor NEVER sees what you used i.e. VISA or Chequing Account.

Good Luck and Happy Shopping.

update:
after adding funds from my bank account to my pay pal account, I was able to make a purchase, even without linking a credit card.

FWIW, my bank account was verified even when the transactions didn't work. Apparently the only difference here is moving the funds to paypal before trying to spend them.

202 New RealTracks Released with Band-in-a-Box 2026!

With Band-in-a-Box® 2026, we've released 202 incredible new RealTracks (in sets 468-488) in a variety of genres—featuring your most requested styles!

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. You'll get new country-rhythm guitar styles from PG Music favorites Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason, along with modern-pop grooves that capture today’s radio-ready sound! There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
