Just connected a Samson G-track USB microphone.
Vista instantly recognized it and loaded some standard driver; no drivers were provided on a cd.
But PTW sees no trace of it as an audio input driver.
PG tech support temporarily stumped (said they'd get back to me).
Any thoughts? Thanks.

One thing often overlooked or misunderstood about USB Audio and even USB MIDI devices is that they must be plugged in and recognized by the OS {i]before starting the host program (PT).
If you start the program and then plug the mic in, the program won't know it is there because the program searches the inputs only when the program starts up.

The Sampson USB mikes are very difficult to get to work period. There are a ton of folks over at the Cakewalk site that buy those to get started with and find quickly that they are nothing short of a nightmare.

You must plug the mike in before starting the program. You must have the ASIO driver installed ASIO4All will work. Once you open the Audio driver window and select the ASIO driver, you will see the SAMSON mike input, as a stereo input device. It works for me

Thanks to all.
The ASIO4ALL driver at least shows up in the Audio driver box. But when I select it--and DEselect my ASIO soundcard--I lose all playback sound.
At least I'm almost there. I'll contact PG tech support again. Thanks.

You must select the soundcard that the speakers are hooked up to for the ASIO driver.
The Mic should be on the LH side of the Audio window, for Inputs.
Select ASIO for Output on the RH side.
You want to record in the mic but monitor using your soundcard.

Byron, the G-Track is a USB audio interface that also has a mic. In order to make it work, you have to first of all make sure that Vista recognizes it as both an input and output device. In fact, you should set it as the default audio device in your settings. Your headphones/speakers should be plugged into the G-Track.
Then, after you've confirmed that you can at least play sound out of it (use Media Player for example), then start up PTPA. You should see at least some kind of generic USB audio device in the listing for devices.
Set it up for both input and output.
Don't bother with ASIO4all unless you have to.

Okay. Great advice. (Samson could have made it as clear as Scott did in the manual.) Connected speakers to unit, With ASIO4ALL still installed, I tried every combination of in- and output ports that appeared in Audio>Drivers. Still no recording input in the VU meter, and no playback sound. Uninstalled ASIO4ALL driver. Unit is now default device in Vista/Sound>Playback and Vista/Sound>Recording indicates input from the mike. Playback from Media Player okay. However, in PT I'm back where I started. Audio>Drivers dialog box shows only soundcard "E-MU ASIO" (and <None>) as inputs; no trace of the Samson. Once again, without ASIO4ALL, PT just doesn't see this device. But this feels like progress. Thanks. * * * * An aside With my limited technical skills and gear, I really want to use this mike precisely because of its multifunctionality. My last BIAB project, I had to record vocals at a friend's house using Sonar, then post-produce every track in PT back at home. By the way, I posted the link to that song here a couple years ago: http://www.broadjam.com/artists/songs.ph...sionINDEX=24247So, if I can get this mike going...

That would indicate that the mic's software has not ASIO drivers, only MME/WDM Windows Sound Drivers.
I just went over to the Samson website, found that mic and downloaded the .pdf users manual for it.
Did a search for the word, "ASIO" and NOTHING found.
This system appears to be Windows Sound (MME/WDM) ONLY!!
And it must be because you installed no drivers, which would be the only way to get ASIO on the thing, no, it is a "class compliant" USB device, which means that it only can do Windoze Sound.
Try changing The Recording Host program's (PT) Audio Driver selection from ASIO to MME and see if you can see the Samson mic then.
Maybe you should seriously consider returning that thing if you still have time to do so, the notion that all-in-one "Swiss Army Knife" solution is going to be easier to use may not have merit with a PC for recording. Besides, the Swiss Army Knife is handy for emergencies, but I would not like to attempt doing a valve job with one, if you get my drift. A simple small mixer plus fair to middling good mic and that E-MU soundcard should blow the thing away anyway. Depending on which E-MU you have, you may not need the mixer, only the mic and a cable. The E-MU will certainly have better audio specs to it due to better converters and analog circuitry.

Thanks, Mac Makes perfect sense. I really learned a lot. And I understand what you mean about the Swiss Army knife. I'll try the MME route a little. But I think I'll take your advice, get back to my soundcard, and use the mixer & mike combination. Come to think of it, I do have a new Shure PG58 (that I've never used). My soundcard is the E-MU 0404. And I just remebered that I also have a little mixer I used to digitize my analog albums. Please take a look at the link and give your opinion of this mixer and of the Shure. http://www.dak.com/reviews/2020pics.cfm#mixer1

That is not the greatest mixer for recording with a mic due to the type of mic preamp it has, likely rather "minimal" and a bit noisy, but if you have a properly wired cable that connects to the '58 end with XLR and has a 1/4" phone plug at the other end you could give it a try.
That mixer is for DJ use.
The mic should prove to be quite nice for recording.

Okay, Mac. The switch to MME drivers solved the problem with the Samson mike; both recording and playback worked fine.
But now I can't hear my keyboard through PT.
o I disconnected the Samson; o Plugged the speakers back into the E-MU, made it the default instead of the Samson; o Switched drivers back to ASIO:
Keyboard sound through PT came roaring back. Any thoughts as to why?
* * * * * Glad to know the Shure '58 will do nicely. You didn't mention whether I'd need a preamp/mixer with the E-MU 0404. If so, I'll look a mixer starting tomorrow.
Thanks for everything.

Out of the two mixers I'd go with that second choice, which evidently has a balanced XLR input that should match the cable to your Shure mic.
If your keyboard is hooked up to the EMU and especially via the EMU's MIDI input as well as Audio inputs, once you invoke the Samson thingy as output, well, you just bypassed the use of the EMU.
That Samson mic is trouble, my friend.
You may be able to select it as INput only and then use the EMU as output card.
In PT or RB, you can select more than one audio input at a time by highlighting both, BTW.

Just a final comment, I have an SM 58from my days singing live, and through a small mixer it works fine for recording. I have recently added the Behringer B1 Condenser Mic and their small tube preamp to the kit I use and there is a small but marked improvement - for not a great deal of cash.

Hi All, I too was having this issue with a Samson GTrack. And the problem went away when I switched RB over to the MME driver. What puzzles me is that on the same computer running Vista, with the same microphone input driver selected in both programs (USB Audio Codec), I can record input from the Samson GTrack into Audacity 1.2.6 but cannot in RealBand. Does this mean that RB allows you to use Asio, but Audacity doesn't? I don't see anywhere in Audacity where you can select Asio as opposed to MME. Still trying to understand this stuff.

I don't think that Audacity implements ASIO, so that's likely the reason.

We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing.
