Well we did the deed yesterday, had the dead bird, all 32 pounds of it, along with the usual seasonal pies. I think baroque music is in order for this tranquil morning. Gerog Pillipp Tellemand perhaps. There should be more cranberries, but I love them more if I go and get them in the swamp out back of the cabin.

88 cents a pound for turkey. Double that if you want assurance that all the parts are there. Mine was missing some offal. I usually make stock from that, but I also buy 2 wings for next to nothing and start the stock after browning those, just add all the stuff from my deck like thyme that's dying soon, and rosemary, carrots from out back, celery, onions, parsnips and boil all day while adding things I find. Use to make the gravy right.

So a 30 pound bird was 25 bucks. Feeds about 30 people if you count all the meals and leftovers.

Very soon it's time for my kids to take over and invite me to their place. I SHOULD get my 35 year pin for doing this at least 5 times a year and retire. Of course I want to meddle...baste it? Not yet. Geez, hand me a brew.

Happy Thanksgiving John. You made me hungry just reading the ingredients for the turkey.

I love leftover turkey, ...even cold.

John, you just have to hint a bit (a lot) that "it's time someone else took a turn as host". Unless of course you're the best chef.

My son and daughter-in-law bought a 16 lb free range turkey and had the group over (first time they've had us all over since they married four years ago - took a strong hint). BTW, the free range turkey was better than I thought it would be (thought it might be a bit dry, but no). Sixteen lbs looked like 16 tons. Maybe that was kg.

The reason we have Thanksgiving before you guys south of 49 is so that we get the first selection of the birds. LOL.

Back in August the wife and I were riding our bikes along a country road and came across half dozen wild turkeys - and no shotgun handy.

I get turkeys in my backyard a few times a year. The males can be unpredictable. We saw 24 a few weeks ago at a conservation area. 2 pairs of turkeys with 10 chicks each. Another warm day with perfect weather. Won't last. In about 3 weeks I live in the wrong place as it needs to be warm. Maybe in May next year eh?
