I called and spoke to Gail just now and she didn't think there had been any changes to the Vibes real tracks since they came out. I realize this was a gift to jazzers mostly and thank you for that. Tho I'm not a real jazzer I'd like to be. I don't know all the things that can effect how a vibe performance sounds in BIAB. Gail mentioned updating. My response was I thought this was not a software issue but I will do that anyway while I'm here.
To me there is nothing wrong with how the vibe notes sound much of the time, it's how the vibrato is accomplished. I sat 2 feet from a world class vibe player the other night for 3 hours of amazing jazz. The vibrato on our vibes [ biab ] sounds like it was accomplished by fader automation/changing the loudness of the note over a range small enough to accomplish the task. Sometimes it works fine. But if you would bring a vibes track up in a jazz tune with more than two chords per bar and listen to the performance it sounds like a player who does not have control of his dynamics. In other words some of the soft strikes are... too soft. I was reminded by that performance to actually come and whine where it might do some good.
I like vibes enough to want to use them as the only chord instrument on some tunes. The weak note strikes [ how ever you did the level changes ] are distracting because often in the presence of bass, brushes and yours truly, these weak sounding strikes are lost. In some of the styles it is in an important place in the bar and the desired tonality is lost. While I always like it when a vibes player turns the whirley tubes on in part of a tune they rarely leave them on all the time. So if you can't fix how you did the vibrato how about giving us a way to turn the vibrato off. This would be my second choice because that sound, when added for a time is so pleasing. Hi Ron,
The RealTracks vibes are recorded as they were performed by Steve Nelson (vibes player for George Shearing, and is one of the best players in the world.). We don't apply any kind of effects or vibrato - just reproduce whatever settings Steve uses.

Hi Ron,
If you don't want as much of a difference between the softer notes and the louder ones, you could use some light compression to reduce the dynamics. Just use pretty slow attack and release settings so you don't change the sound too much.
The PG Dynamics plugin could be used in RealBand for this.

Ron, as someone who doubles on vibes, I'm not sure about your statement that players turn the rotor on and off during a song. I prefer to use the rotor for slower songs and leave it on. At least on my set, it's hard enough to adjust the belt for different speeds that I don't mess with it within one tune. The pro you saw may be different, of course, since it is all player's preference.
