Hi,
I assembled and set up a new Wondows 7 (Ultimate) Computer. Here`s my question:
* Is there a way to have an own "profile" with settings suitable for audio recording?
* In detail I would like to stop services, change settings like the power settings, change the Aero theme into a basic theme, etc., maybe even disable some hardware.
I would then like to be able to switch to the normal profile when I finished recording.
I don`t know much about the UAC (I disabled it, since it bugs the hell outta me), but as I understand it, all it does is administrate the rights of files.
Any ideas are welcome,

As far as I am aware the tweaks that you mention were popular to help free up system resources when computers were not powerful enough to run very demanding audio applications, but modern computers usually don't have that problem. I have anti virus everything on my windows 7 33 bit machine and it runs fine with any audio application I have tried so far.
The other way you could do it is have a dual boot machine which I have, as 2 instances of windows 7 will run no problem on different partitions or drives no problems with activation etc, but would mean restarting your computer when you wanted to go into normal no audio mode.
Of course you will be able to set the default os that you want to boot from if you just want to switch your computer on and then just walk away and let it boot (or choose the windows 7 installation that you want to start when it appears on screen at boot time)
hope this might be a solution to you.

You haven't told us the specs for your machine Sandra but I agree with Mike, a new Win 7 multicore machine with lots of ram doesn't seem to have those problems we used to get with XP. I have everything running including AV on my AMD Phenom and haven't had any glitches or dropouts yet. That even includes having several browers windows open too. I used to make sure the browser was closed but even that doesn't seem to bother my new setup.
The only problem I found is I can't format a floppy disc using my USB external A drive for my Korg keyboard. After some Google searches I found out the problem is only on AMD machines using a Gigabit motherboard and that's exactly what I have. I have to run a USB cable from my Korg to the machine to transfer stuff or use my laptop.

My specs, look like this:
Intel i5 2500 (4x3.3 GHz)
16 GB RAM
RME Hammerfall Soundcard + Outbreakbox
a couple of 7200rpm internal HDs
Win 7 Ultimate 64bit
Cubase 4, a bunch of VSTi`s
As I understand this my mashine should be able to handle everything ok. I just thought I`d shut some of those unneeded services down, while I`m recording/mixing. And I don`t want to do this by hand every single time.

IMO your machine looks fine - so short answer is YES! (but since I don't stop by much and have zero street creds here you need to get validation from other regulars: e.g., Matt, Mike, Mac, etc.)
Notwithstanding that validation, the longer answer is, as you probably suspect, you still want to be vigilant about what you let Windows 7 "help you" with and what SW you let "auto" load or run at startup or that keeps running after it's been told to shut off (I hate SW like that). I run a fairly lean "PC" ship at ALL TIMES even with my new rig (which is just a hair above yours in specs) but that doesn't mean it's crippled or "boring." I must use one ONE machine, not counting my laptop, for everything (work, DAW, web surfing, gaming, ....) and my plan is to make it ready do ANY of those if, and when, needed just as was my retiring DELL XPS WIN XP 3.2 GHZ/4GB machine. However, you are a much more serious DAW user than I - so again I think you are OK but get validation from the GURU's here.

Back story: after a VERY recent attempt to save myself some time (WRONG) by buying a PC off-the-shelf I ended up RMA'ing that PC - then, in the last 4 weeks, I've "rolled my own." It is the one I'm typing on now (I'm still installing SW, tweaking and configuring and will be till next year - I have a lot of SW to install and I am still learning Win 7 tweaks, ins and outs, as I go (can't say I am enjoying the ride either). Note to MS: QUIT TRYING to help me, second guess for me, and think for me - PLEASSSSSSSSE! (I didn't buy an Apple for a reason). But the whole Windows 7 is a discussion for another thread
BTW UAC was the FIRST thing I turned off!

Far be it for me to give validation to anyone for anything...
As a programmer, I used to test all the OS tweaks, and it made a difference. I even tried a few when Windows 7 beta was first released. Very quickly, both by experimentation and from reading all the articles, I decided they were no longer necessary on Windows 7.
I have an i5 (using it now) and it runs audio software with no tweaks at all. I do turn off the internal soundcard, and adjust UAC down, but otherwise, it runs fine as is.

I have a windows 7 machine (specs in my tag line)
Until last weekend I never had any problems... but I installed BFD ECO and it drops out every time I try to use it. Has anybody else had similar problems?
My son is a computer pro... he came over last weekend and we looked at a lot of things.. CPU is not spiking.. RAM is not deficient... yet it drops out. He didn't see a reason why it was dropping out.
Could it be that loading a large soft sound from the same disk as the operating system could cause that? If I move it to the slave drive, do you think that would help?

Hi Pat, I recently purchased the ECO as well, I did get some crackle going on so I had to adjust the buffer size in the stand alone program. However I cannot run this program in RB because it just slams the cpu to max and stutters. ECO runs just fine as a stand alone or in Reaper as a plugin for me but RB cannot handle it for some reason. My system is Win7 32, AMD64x2-3800+, 2gb, 1tb HD,Nvidia 8500,Delta 44 which I built like 5 years ago. The only plug in that gives me this problem is the ECO and only in RB.

Sandra, today's PCs do have a lot of oomph to handle even demanding audio tasks like a breeze. You may just go for testing recording sessions with some standard user profile. If you experience some unexpected dropouts or whatnot, it should be easy to create a dedicated user profile (Systemsteuerung -> Benutzerkonten) deactivating some unnecessary background processes, such as wireless lan stuff etc..

If that is OK, then it would seem the BFD ECO is badly written.

Turn off UAC, of course.
After that, I am a firm believer in not attempting to cross any bridges unless and until one appears in front of you.
Today's Operating Systems do indeed seem to need very little in the way of tweaks for us to use as music making machines. That's a good thing.
But - if after running the softwares, going thru the shakedown period, you do encounter a particular problem, then you have to trace down the cause of that problem and find out what it takes to fix things.
But I wouldn't do any tweaks beforehand without first confirming that those tweaks actually need to be done in order to solve a real problem that the machine is exhibiting.

Matt, or anyone else with a lot of experience with this: I'm on the cusp of buying a new Win 7 computer to replace my XP sp3 machine. It's great to hear that Windows 7 is handling audio recording without much in the way of tweaks. I was curious about this, though: Sweetwater.com still has a list of recommended Windows 7 optimizations for audio work http://www.sweetwater.com/sweetcare/downloads/Windows_7_Optimization_Guide_revB.pdfSome of their recommendations: 1) Disable UAC 2) Disable USB power management 3) Change processor scheduling to "background services" 4) In BIOS, disable "Intel Speedstep", or "AMD Cool 'n Quiet" ir /"dynamic acceleration" Some of these I remember from XP optimizations, but I was wondering if you agree with any of the changes that Sweetwater suggests in the PDF above. I didn't list them all because it's a fairly long list. Thanks, John

3) not if you also use SONAR like I do, since they say don't
4) this is processor dependent; you have to read about that specific CPU

I didn't know Cakewalk says NOT to set processor scheduling to "background services."
I've had it set that way since Sonar 2.2, so I will take a look at that.

UPDATE
just downloaded it and ran it on my music machine.
It said "this computer should have no problem streaming
audio in real time without dropouts"
So it must be something to do with BFD ECO. I'll uninstall
it and reload it to my slave drive to see if that helps
Funny thing is that my son has BFD2, which is MUCH larger
than BFD ECO, and it runs flawlessly on his computer, which
is not much different than mine. huh. go figure.

John, in truth, I don't think it makes much of a difference.
At one point, everyone was recommending that "background services" priority tweak, and even then, I tried it both ways and saw no difference. The lone voice against doing it was Noel Borthwick, Chief Technology Officer for Cakewalk (who makes SONAR, for anyone else reading). If I had to pick one person to believe, it would be him, and SONAR is my most intensive audio app. Noel said that for SONAR at the time, which was version 7.x, we should not do the tweak. Even he didn't seem too emphatic about it.
I now have SONAR X1C Expanded, and it's been a few years since anyone has mentioned the tweak at Cakewalk, one way or the other. Bottom line, I still don't think it matters. But, you asked, and that's the reason.

Thanks. I'm now using Sonar 8.5, but on XP, sp3 Pentium 4, 2.8 GHz.
It's time to get an i5 or i7.
I just can't decide if I should stick with an m-audio pci card like I've been using or go with a USB audio/midi interface.
Off-the-shelf computers with i7 and a pci slot are getting hard to find.
