Hi Rob,
Congrats to your Dad! You can be really proud of him. Do you musically corporate with him? Is his knowledge usefull for you and your musical career? Sometimes it`s nice working with a family member.

Being raised in a musical family definately gave me a lot of exposure to music. When the family owns a local music store it has its benefits... then again I remember washing windows and moving pianos, I dreaded that!
I am indeed proud of him, the part about the fire and paying everybody back made a big impression on me. He is the most honest and honorable person I know.
Its well earned, and I am very happy for him, and mom. She did a ton of work 'behind the scenes' as it were. She earned it too.
I've been trying for about a year to talk him into starting a recording studio at the store. Another employee recently suggested it too, so in the future I may be able to work with him, but for now I've been occasionally working for him. I have a lot of construction background and knowledge, and there is always something to do at the store. The store keeps growing. Another testament to his reputation.

That is a cool cover. It is nice to see hard working folks recognized for that contribution.

You've got every reason to be proud! A couple of centuries ago, that MMR piece would surely have had the subtitle "or Virtue Rewarded". A good read. Congrats!

Bob,
Congratulations to your Dad on such an honor. To be the first, out of so many, it speaks volumes to what your dad's life is all about, and the story is truly rewarding. Many people would give up, I'm glad he didn't.

As to the recording studio, I'm honestly surprised it hasn't happened already. If the bands that he has encouraged are as good as the article claims, and I have no doubt they are, then a studio would be a place for 'national recognition' via a CD or other media outlet, and you need a good studio to do that in.

Congrats!

Gary

Gary,
I don't think he is after the 'national recognition', although it found him this time.
He'll do the studio if he thinks its the right decision. I think its getting his interest as of late. He has everything there already.

Glenn- he DOES look young, but I'm his son and its been a while since I saw 35...

JEP- virtue rewarded; well put.

Mac- you know the dedication involved in that kind of service. Thanks for the years you've put in, and I'm sure I only know the half of it..

Thanks for sharing the moment everyone.

I'm still in awe of how your dad insisted on paying all the supplier back -- and then did it.

That is the "old school" business ethic -- "My word is my bond."

Told my wife that story, Bob.

I'm amazed by it too. With all the bankruptcy and bailouts going on, its a rare thing to see. We had a few lean years when I was growing up and now I more fully understand why. Glad it was impressive to you too, as a lot of people don't really think about the discipline needed to do that. Going bankrupt and starting over without worrying about it would be very tempting. The article doesn't mention it but he has told me that he paid everyone back with interest too, to make things right. BTW that fire was arson, intentionally set. No idea why. But it was Detroit in the late '60's and things were very ugly then in a lot of ways. Best guess is that someone wanted that corner property.

He was President of NAMD for a few years too, which is another way he gave back to the music community.
Its really great to see him getting recognition for all his years of music service.

A man of honor.

You should be extremely proud.

Wow! Bob, he's quite a man. I'd sure love to have his energy. That's the kind of man every man needs to be.

Bob,
I know, just from the article, that National Recognition is the last thing he wanted. When I talk to a soldier, sailor, airman or Marine who has served in combat, whether just recently or in WWII, Korea or Viet Nam, I tell them they are heros, and indeed they are. However, to a person, none of them will accept that, saying simply 'it was my job.'

I suspect that your dad is much the same way, while appreciative of this honor, he probably feels very uncomfortable being in the spotlight, and would rather just go back to doing what he's done all along, because what he's been doing is what he is.

That is only supposition on my part, but I'd be willing to lay long odds I'm not too far off the mark.

Gary

Bob,

It's great to see that you were impressed by your father's honesty and character. Good to see you pay tribute to him. That good report is the most precious thing that we can leave to our children.
