Well, an RT Style would not have any MIDI data on the empty track, or may contain muted MIDI data left over from the original MIDI Style that the RT Style was built from.

I think you would first have to use the new feature that imports the MIDI data from a MIDI style to that track, and then invoke the chosen VSTi synth on it.

Forgive if I'm not following you here, but "RT Style" as you mention it in the OP is what jumps out at me this AM.
