Past user up to ver 2009 and thinking of upgrading to everything pak on 160 gig hd.

I would like to keep hd as backup and install certain parts to laptop.

I'm mainly interested in using real track pianos as a learning tool,
so they would need to show the real charts.

Can I install only selected real tracks to laptop or do they have to be installed as sets ?

Is there a way of knowing prior to install which real tracks will have real charts ?

Best i know from experience with past installs and based on the default installers the answeres are: No and No. But keep in mind the RT's are 70% smaller in size then way back in the 2009 version.

Hi Danna,

Much has changed as to the amount of space needed since ver 2009.

There is a command inside the newer versions of BB that will allow you to eliminate 2/3 of the Realtracks your version stores, because there is no longer a need for duplication of the same realtrack in two or three other keys due to the amazing abilities of the embedded Elastique pitch stretching engine.

This means that you may just have enough room on your internal laptop hardrive to simply just do the installation.

After the installation is done, if you want to remove certain of the realtracks that you don't want to use, I don't see why you couldn't just manually Delete those from the drive. They will simply show up as "N/A" and will yield an error message should you try to invoke one that isn't there. That would also solve the last question problem, as you would be able to peruse the Realtracks picker and see if there is a chart available or not and simply decide to delete those that don't have the chart available.

I also like to keep the supplied hard drive as a backup. You could first run the program directly from there, without installing to your computer, and view the RealTracks to see which ones you want. Then install just the program to your computer and, if you're comfortable manipulating files, manually copy just the RealTracks you want to your computer's hard drive. I do this every time, since there are some RealTracks I am certain I will not be using.

The RealTracks (and RealDrums) do come in sets, and you can copy just the folder(s) you want. For example, X:/BB/RealTracks/Piano,Acoustic,Rhythm PopWaltz Ev120 is one set of twelve RealTracks. A similar folder at tempo 180 is another set of twelve (not to say that they are all in groups of twelve).

Install them all to your computer and erase some, or copy only some, gets you to the same place.

>>> I'm mainly interested in using real track pianos as a learning tool,
so they would need to show the real charts.

All of the pianos have RealCharts, except some of the comping ones on Rhodes Piano.

RealCharts for piano are a good tool for learning piano. For example, on the latest version, 2012, there are piano RealTracks by John Jarvis, a CMA (Country Music Association) Pianist of the year winner. Plus Jazz and Bossa tracks from NY Jazz-Great Mike LeDonne, plus Dixieland and Older Jazz styles from the great pianist Miles Black. That's just in the 101 new RealTracks - if you're upgrading from 2009, there are about 505 new RealTracks.

>> Is there a way of knowing prior to install which [piano] real tracks will have real charts ?

Yes, for piano they all have RealCharts, unless they are Rhodes comping (Rhodes soloing do have realcharts). For guitar, they all have RealCharts. For Bass, some. Soloing RealTracks: All have RealCharts.

If you want finer detail, you can determine this exactly, prior to install. Just run your Band-in-a-Box program, open RealTracks picker, click Show RealTracks that are N/A, and then look in the "RealCharts" column.
That will tell you exactly which RealTracks from which Sets have the RealCharts.

>>> Can I install only selected real tracks to laptop or do they have to be installed as sets ?

You install as sets. Typicall if one in the set has RealCharts, they all do. If space is an issue, you can just delete RealTracks folders of ones you don't want

You can look on the information about the sets, avaialable here http://www.pgmusic.com/bbwin.realtracks.htm

Dana,

If space is an issue, it's also possible to install BIAB/RB so that the program itself is loaded on your computer's hard drive but all the Realtracks and Realdrums are stored and run from the the portable USB hard drive. My experience is that it is pretty much just as quick to use the USB hard drive for Realtracks and Realdrums. If you choose this setup option, though, I'd do a back-up copy of the hard drive onto a second USB drive (they're amazingly cheap these days).

All the best,
Noel

P.S. You will be amazed at how far the program has come since 2009!

I use a laptop with a Biab USB HD that it came installed on. I run directly from the HD w/o any problems. Real Tracks load fast and sound fantastic.
