this may involve a definition of terms John...
In the main screen the grid is at the top and all the tracks are below. The tracks are so far away from the grid that there's no easy way to align a hilited section in a track to the tick marks. (when hiliting a track you can't see where you are on the grid)

In the audio editor, the tick marks appear inside the track (But at the top, just under the buttons, not all the way through the WAV)which makes it very easy to start hiliting at the right place (even though the grid doesn't extend all the way through the track, it isn't necessary)

The only reason you'd need it to go all the way through all the tracks as stated previously is to visually connect the grid at the top of the screen with ALL of the tracks at once. When dealing with one track at a time (as in the editor) having the grid at the top works fine.
