What sound card are you using?
I have a "Creative SB X-FI gammer" that I'm not happy with.
I changed to this card last fall sometime thinking it would give me better responce both in gamming and sound, but it didn't.
While playing some games, I get a squeeling sound and an intermittent clicking, however I don't have any problem with recording or playbacks.
I'm going to replace the card and would like to know what everyone else is using and would recommend.
Thanks,
Walt

Maybe opening the software mixer and muting the MIC in the playback side would solve the squealing, which may be only feedback if you've got a mic plugged in and speakers running at the same time...

Thanks mac,
I do have the mic muted but of course the speakers are on.
The squeal is not the sound of a feed back squeal.
I can't think of a good example, maybe if you turned an AM radio to max treble and spun the dial as fast as you could...!
It's hard to explain, maybe I could record it, I don't know.
Thanks,
Walt

Okay.

This type of behavior is often due to IRQ sharing.

Check your IRQ table (google to find out how) there is a good chance that your soundcard is sharing an IRQ with some other high bandwidth device.

Do not believe the Windoze "no conflict" report here, it will always report that no matter what.

Ideally, your soundcard should be all alone on an IRQ -- by itself.

If it isn't, try putting it into another PCI slot, start up and check the table again.

Bobs suggestion of a 1010lt is valid if you're doing multiple channels of audio at the same time. Creative is dead, as far as I'm concerned, they've shot themselves in the foot last year, and have bled to death. You can't even find drivers on their website for old Audigy 2 cards.

I bought an Asus Xonar D2X card, in the PCI-e version of it, and it sounds good for playback, and seems to play nicely with my external DAC.

I'll have a more detailed report on it in a week or so. It's expensive, but it gets good reviews.

Bob's 1010 card is an M-Audio Delta Series card.

They are known for robust drivers, relatively clean sound and they work and play well with PGMusic products.

Those not needing multiple channel inputs can save money and get the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card, which is "just" two channels analog input and output and two channels S/PDIF input and output but is still in the Delta series, using the same drivers as the larger 1010 card.

I use on on my Desktop every day and it works and plays well with PGMusic products.

Be advised that most other soundcards no longer contain a MIDI synth solution such as the Soundfont Engine in the Creative cards, but that is not a kill these days as there are softwares available that will allow you to load and play your Soundfonts, such as SFZ or Synthfont, etc. These too work well with the Delta series cards and most audio host softwares.

I'm on Vista and still using my old Creative Live 5.1 - got the drivers from the guy that Creative tried to close down -works perfectly.
Don't know if it would work with the Audigy 2 or not Gary, but I have full control with the Live.
(I thought the Gamer worked well with Vista according to other posts I've seen)

Mark,
I found a copy of those drivers, and tried testing them with Windows 7, which I'm beta testing, and they did not work. Besides, the Xonar gives me optical in and out that doesn't resample everything I put into it, which is something I want.

The other thing is that Harpster specified a Gaming system, which often means a mic and headphone jack for in game chatting. The Deltas, fine cards that they are, won't support that. M-Audio used to carry a computer sound card, with all the standard ins and outs for computer use, but do not appear to make that card any more.
