I decided to put this in the Off Topics forum since it's the "message" in the song that's of interest here!!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91AZ4-qx3...ture=plpp_video

Your thoughts? Good approach nowadays or not?

Perfectly performed with great singing. That's a good one. I'll leave the message debating to others.

Debate on the subject is just a waste of time.

Great song and preformance.

This explains why things today are like they are. That is no Bible and no discipline.

Well, the question wasn't about the song (well written and performed), but the message in the song.

Although the song co-joins "Bible" and "belt", it's really a song about using a belt to punish bad behavior. The singer tells how he was taught to "respect" and "fear" both the belt and the Bible. Two examples were given of incidents worthy of being hit by a belt: lying, and refusing to take back a stolen comic. The belt was applied hard enough to leave a welt.

It implies that now that he has kids he's taking the Bible and belt route with his own children. He admits that some kids were raised without the Bible and belt, and sort of implies that it's rare these days that parents use the two.

The fundamental thesis is that many of the problems he sees in people stem from parents "sparing the rod" (so to speak).

It's a popular sentiment, but from the bio on his webpage it appears that Rory is the father of two girls (likely young adults by now). Do you think he took his girls "behind the shed" and belted them hard enough to raise a welt?

I doubt it.

My own personal experience as a child was that while a belt was a memorable experience, it wasn't particularly effective at changing behavior in the long run. (I'll concede that I never got as severe a belting as the singer appears to advocate).

Speaking as a father of four, I can't imagine a situation where I'd belt my kid, and I can't imagine a situation where it would be helpful in creating long term behavior modification.

I never got the belt, but the razor strap was quite effective.

I have fond memories of my older sister standing by and chiming in, "Oh, by the way, he also did this, and that, and this..... ." Of course she denies it all.

David,

I know "very well" what the song is about and what it implied as I am not quite senile yet, I just did not care to enter the debate as to whether or not one should spank their children as I think that is a personal choice and therefore none of my business. But for what it's worth and on a personal note, while I never did get the "belt" I did get a foot in the rear every now and then.

I have no opinion on the message of the song as that debate will rage on forever. The performance was good. The song, to me, came off like a story too contrived from the term Bible Belt. Not my taste, I didn't like it.

Danny, you're right - there was no need for me to criticize what you or others decided to post. You've got my sincere apology.

Excellent performance, well written, fine singing.

I am sick to death with hearing complaints about "kids these days."

The song associates pain, raising a welt and fear with the Bible. Not my cup of tea.

The following things get my attention:

1) both are instruments of discipline used responsibly, and instruments of abuse used irresponsibly.

2) It's a straw man argument to judge the whole value of something based on the worst-case scenario. A rational appraisal of any activity fully considers all the good and all the bad caused by it.

3) I don't think the songwriter was advocating beating children; rather I think he was making an interesting comparison to an audience that values good ol' down home discipline, and wisdom learned by experience (sometimes the hard way)

4) A fool repeats his mistakes without learning from them
An average person learns from his mistakes.
An average person who learns from his mistakes gains wisdom
A wise man watches and learns from the mistakes of other.

5) For those who are capable of learning from their mistakes, it is better to gain wisdom from a small consequence administered by someone who loves you than to go through life without guidance, only to receive the full consequence of a bad decision administered by a world that doesn't give a rat's patutie if you live or die.

What mistakes? You have to get one thing, and I think only one thing.

Life is not short. It's shorter.

You have a few breaths to take and it's over.

Cherish what you have, and figure out where to go. Be Happy

You will not understand much now.

Someday, it's maybe.

Buckle up, take the ride, enjoy, be a grinner, like stupid crazy stuff, and forget about yesterday.

Get with the program. Did you ever ask if there is one? A program. It might be like that manual...it's gone, no, over there, up there, whoops...

Take it, ...easy!
