I've seen suggestions to turn off virus wear and fire walls for some reason or other. My question is if there
on the computer to protect it why would anyone suggest turning something like that off. The only example I
can give is in order to access a guitar picking room a few years back I couldn't get in and it was suggested
to me to turn off my fire wall, which I did and was able to access the room.

Frank, I would not advise turning your antivirus nor firewall off, if you are connected to the internet or are loading files from CD's, emails, flash drives or other media that you have received from someone. New viruses, malware, spyware are created at a rate of 1000's per day. The bad guys are always looking for a way to hack your system. Embeding viruses, key-loggers, and others in MP3's, JPG's (pictures) and even holiday greeting cards is a current favorite of the hackers.
You will sometimes hear this suggestion in regards to stopping or reducing audio drop-outs as these defenses can sometimes hog system resources.
I would not recommend that you shut these systems off for any reason unless your system is a non-internet dedicated box. Any website that you can't get to is probably a site you should not go to. There was a proble about 6 months or so ago with sites that were not able to handle 64 bit, high cypher (256K) browser, but that appears to have been resolved now....at least on any site I have visited lately.

To be honest, the people who sell that software paint a far more drastic situation than is true int he real world. Anybody with a thimble full of common sense will NEVER get a virus. I don't run any antivirus software. I am behind a router and LAN IPs are not routable, so nobody can force their way onto a 192.168.xx.xx address and plant anything there. And if I don't know you, your email gets deleted without even a first look. I don't go to web pages with offers for a bigger penis, a list of hot women in my area who want to hook up, to see if I won the AOL "Email Address Sweepstakes", to see photos of a dead Bin Laden.... you get the idea.
My ex wife was the nosiest human being on earth and was CONSTANTLY opening garbage emails because they had an enticing subject line.
The more recent one is "Your credit score may have change." One big one was "I am very upset about Tuesday." and she would say "Geeeee.... what happened Tuesday?" and open the email. 4 1/2 years of teaching and warning....
That firewall is a DEFENSIVE software. If you are running your music software it is sitting idle using 0% of your CPU. It does not randomly invoke itself and start scanning drives looking for trouble. It WILL come into play if you get an email in, but you know better than to be on the internet while working, right? Better still, set up a dedicate computer and don't even have your music computer online. A lot of us here do that. Mine HAS a wireless NIC in it but it is disabled while I am working. You will get that very advice from many users here.

Perhaps the advice you heard was to turn off the virus etc. programs while you were installing the software. There have been problems when that was not done. It is similar to the advice you get to exit all other programs before installing.

That is easy to turn off .. yet I've had half a dozen people smile when I did it for them.
Open Avast! (usually via lower right taskbar)
Select 'Settings', then 'Sounds' and uncheck the box.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Thanks everyone for the comments. I won't be turning anything off ever, The picking
room I turned the fire wall off for is no longer on line that was at least 2 yrs ago.
But I stopped getting on it after awhile because I didn't feel comfortable about it.

Hi everyone.
Just reading through the posts and wondering if the case has just been made for having a separate, dedicated music computer. Anti-virus, firewalls and such like will certainly affect the latency of ASIO drivers, which is a problem if you're playing a VST synth in real time.
The good news is that the folks at PG Music write very efficient code, which means you don't have to shell out big bucks for a top-end machine. Our oldest computer has an AMD Sempron 2.11 with 1 gig RAM and running Power Tracks 2010 will still play over 24 audio tracks at the same time as 3 VST instruments and a handful of plugin effects. It should be possible to pick up a computer like this for not much money and a clean install of Windows XP should do the trick.
As a bonus, because the machine isn't on the internet, it doesn't constantly up-date the operating system, so every time we switch it on it behaves like it did last time!
