I would like to play a song in BIAB and record it in Audacity. I haven't been able to find the correct settings for the 2 programs. I checked the Audacity FAQs with no luck (assuming that's where I would find the required info.)
This is on a Certified Data netbook, with an Intel Atom processor running Windows XP Home SP3. The sound chip is Realtek High Definition Audio. I've checked all the Volume windows I can find, all the sliders are up and nothing is muted. BIAB 2012 Build 348. BIAB MIDI output driver is set to VST/DXi Coyote (although I've also tried MS GS Wavetable). Audacity has 3 options for Recording Device: Realtek HD Audio input, Reallusion Virtual Audio 1 and MS Sound Mapper - Input. I can't get any of those choices to record what BIAB is playing.
Any ideas? HELP!! Thanks! Lloyd S

Hm. No option for Realtek Speakers? (I have a Realtek mobo myself.)
I don't know Audacity, so I can't help much with their I/O config, but is there any reason you can't render the song to audio in BIAB, saving it as a .wav (or a .wav for each track), and then just load that rendered audio into Audacity?

Filkertom:
There is no option for "Realtek Speakers" in Audacity, either in Playback Device or Recording Device. And you're right about the process of rendering in BIAB to load to Audacity. That process works fine. It's just that I know the "direct record" from BIAB to Audacity works on my desktop PC at home and I'd like to be able to do the same on the netbook, here on the road. I suspect this little Atom processor is putting some "glitches" in the BIAB rendered wave, although I can't completely verify that. I'm hoping that won't be the case in a direct BIAB to Audacity process.
Thanks for your help! LLOYD

I just start Band in a Box and Audacity. I mess with the settings sometimes, but usually I just hit play and it works, it records, leaves a blank spot at the front, and end. I trim them off and that's it.
So I size both windows so they don't overlap and work it from there, but really once my volume settings are good everything is smooth. Now if you want to hear yourself sometimes that requires some headscratching, but it works.

John: That's what I usually do too. Just hit Record in Audacity then Play in BIAB and away it goes. I tried that first with no luck. Then messed with all the setting but still no recording in Audacity. Thanks for your replay!
Anyone else have a suggestion? Thanks! LLOYD S

Make sure the Audacity input is set toeither "stereo mix" or "what-u-hear".

The Audacity Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O window shows Playback Device and Recording Device. Both have dropdowns. Neither shows "stereo mix" nor "what-u-hear". Perhaps those show up if you have a Soundblaster card but not for the Realtek soundchip???
Does that seem correct? Otherwise please let me know how to get to the Audacity settings you mentioned. Thanks for your help! LLOYD S

Try Control Panel Sounds Recording If "stereo mix" or "what you hear" is not showing Right click in window Put checkmark in "Show Disabled Devices" and click apply Then see if Audacity will recognize sound card. I also use an mp3 recorder that works well and recognizes my realtek sound card. Lets you adjust bitrate. Your soundcard should show in "Devices" area http://www.mp3mymp3.com/

I think only Creative Labs cards (like Audigy) enable recording "what you hear" as a driver. The easy route is to just generate a .wav or .mp3 and drag it into Audacity. I use iSound Pro for Win 7 direct recording of "what I hear" http://www.mp3-wma-recorder.com/A few bucks well spent (though MSFT really should bake this capability in Windows.)

Danna: I can't quite get there from here <grin>. In the Control Panel, I have "Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices". That window shows: "Pick a task" then - Adjust the system volume - Change the sound scheme - Change the speaker settings I checked all those, none require attention.
The same window with Pick a task, also shows: "or pick a Control Panel Icon" with the choices - Sounds and Audio Devices (brings up a window I've already checked) - Speech (brings up a Text to Speech window) - Realtek HD Sound Effect Manager
The last one held more promise as it has a Mixer tab showing settings for both Playback (don't need, it works fine) and Record. The Record area shows sliders for Mic Volume Line Volume and Stereo Mix, with an enable radio button for each (only one can be enabled at a time).
It was set to "Mic Volume". I changed it to "Line Volume" and tried the record process again in Audacity. Still nothing.
Am I even in the right place here?
I also found a window by right clicking the Volume icon in the bottom icon tray, and selecting Open Volume Control. All volumes are up, nothing muted, no right-click-in-window option available.
But when I click on Options and select Properties, it shows the "Mixer device" as "Realtek HD Audio output" and "Adjust volume for - Playback (button enabled) but the "Recording button is greyed out. Could this be the problem?
Thanks for your help! LLOYD S.

Lloyd -
That third option is the "Stereo Mix" I was talking about. Mic Volume is for the microphone input; Line Volume is for whatever is coming through the Line In connection on your sound card, and "stereo mix" is for recording whatever you are hearing through the speakers. When you want to record "what you hear", then select "stereo mix" on that record tab and give it a try.

We mentioned that earlier, Mike. He says that works, but I think he's going for workflow.

This thread intrigued me for it would allow streaming record...I think. Uncle Google: Use this with google..... audacity internal recording or click this. https://www.google.com/#hl=en&sugexp...l=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=6b29ab0951e4b347&biw=1049&bih=812 Lot of interesting options listed. Any work ??? for now. I reviewed this link: http://www.sevenforums.com/software/49463-audacity-recording-directly-laptop.htmlGo down the page towards bottom where the recording window shows the red arrow. Try that out... If the What U hear appears click and make default. BUT MAKE sure you external speakers are turned way down Last posting on this thread sound this persons problem. Updates. Good Luck !

Accessing your Record Properties is not done thru the Control Panel, although it may be possible.
Try this:
DoubleClick on the little Speaker icon next to the clock in the taskbar.
The first window that opens will be the Playback mixer applet.
Go to "File" in that menu and select "Properties".
In the next window that opens, select to view the Record properties.
There you should find a list of all possible Record inputs for the built in soundcard, one of those should be able to do the trick, it may be labled, "Stereo Mix" or it may be labled something else. Remember, you can only select (check) ONE record input at a time.
Also keep in mind that you should be usiong Windows Sound drivers in Audacity, and not any kind of ASIO wrapper.

That did the trick, i.e. option 3 Stereo Mix. I tried to reply earlier so everyone would know I had things sorted out by my post didn't "go". I'm in our motorhome in a campground in Mexico and the internet is sporadic at best (I know, whine whine whine <grin>).
In any case, thank you all for chiming in on this thread. I really appreciate the help.

We're in Rincon de Guayabitos, about an hour north of Puerto Vallarta. We'll be here until the first part of March. If you're coming over to the coast, let me know. Perhaps we can connect somewhere.
