So I just got new bib2012 and was looking at Real Band. I play sax and I like to get arrangements in bib and then record my part and then mix in protools as a demo. But this looks like Real Band will do all of that being able to record tracks and mix and keep track of mixer editing. Does it sound like I'm on the right track (so to speak)?

Yes, although this post should be in the Real Band forum. Go there and start reading the posts plus watch the RB tutorials and just open it up and play with it. RB is unique in that it's a hyrbid combining a standard DAW like Protools with Biab. It opens Biab files plus generates Biab parts, both midi and the Real Tracks/Drums. Like anything else, it's tricky at first but basically pretty easy to use.

Yes, you're right. You can do your arranging in BIAB, move it to RealBand, add in your sax part and then do your mixing there too.
You could also do the ENTIRE process in RealBand. It has many of the same arrangement functions as BIAB.

Thanks. I'm pretty impressed with the software and didn't really know it was included.

That's the funniest part to me. I actually prefer Realband and they don't really market it with any effort. The fact that it's a free bonus to BiaB is very cool.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

I like to start my arrangements in BIAB, get it 80 - 90% done and after saving - then I open the file in RB to do my RT edits. The two are not totally interchangeable as some things are still easier accomplished first in BIAB - for me anyway.

I find that if I have a song idea that consists of a "playalong track" it is much faster to just play that track into RB, send it to ACW to extract the chords and tempo, then start adding additional tracks (either with Realtracks or my own playing.) Doing this I usually end up with something that sounds close to what I had in mind.
When I start in BIAB the end result ends up sounding more like the selected style... and it can be really time consuming to audition 2,000 styles to see which one is closest to what I envisioned.
One key element to getting exactly the sound I want is the drum beat... and in RB the drum grid that enables the creation of a custom beat in minutes really helps to sculpture exactly the cadence I had in mind

I must be doing something wrong here. When I record in BiB and then mix it in Real Tracks I get all the tracks I am hearing while recording on the new track (if I solo it) along with my sax from the mic. Is there a way to hear all the tracks while recording in BiB but when you go to Real Tracks to mix just have the sax in the new track. I got this to work by panning all wave to right and all mic to left on my soundcard but there must be a better way.

Wear closed back headphones when recording a new track with a mic.
Then you hear the backing track in the headphones but the microphone does not also pick them up from the speakers and re-record them.

Here's what I'm doing. Recording in BiB with headphones and speakers off. The wave created contains the sax from the mic plus the backing tracks (not from the headphones). Is there a way to just record what comes from the mic but still hear the backing tracks while recording? Then I could have a track with just the sax available in Real Tracks. Real Tracks plays the BiB instruments just like BiB so it doesn't need those on the wave file too. Hope this makes sense.

You can drag and drop only the one track you want into Real Band. Alternatively, you could move your project into Real Band first, and then record your sax part using Real Band.

The recording function has that as an option. Check what is checked or not when you do it. The other thing is to make sure you mute all tracks after, 'cause if you press play you get a new drumtrack that plays along. So to hear ONLY what you got on the record take, you need to play only that audio.
Again as to how I workflow this, but I start a folder that says SongA1.
Then in that folder I put the band in a box song. I record there, there is a .wav file in there after the recording. I listen to that, not the band in a box output like bass and drums etc.
This is a matter of settings and how you operate the steps in your work.
Others probably do this another way.

As far as I can see so far whether in BIAB or Real Band whatever you hear in your headphones while recording will get recorded to the selected track. There is no way to hear a track while recording but not have it record to the selected track. I could still sort of make it work by panning the mic track to one side.

If that were actually true this program would be of little value for recording. Your problem is with your system setup. Like someone mentioned earlier, it is tricky at first but once setup properly - it will record an individual track agains a multitrack background, as designed.

Yes there is a way to do this. To achieve this, and to elaborate on what John above has said, it's necessary to set the "Recording Properties" of soundcard through Windows. How you do this will depend on your version of Windows and your soundcard. This setting applies to BIAB and RB.
For me, I have a Soundblaster Audigy card and use Windows Vista ...
I right-click on the speaker icon in the task bar and choose "Recording Devices". I then need to set the "Mic" option as default (as shown in the picture below). This will ONLY record what is coming through the mic.

If "What U Hear" is set as default (see picture below), BIAB/RB will record what comes through the mic as well as what BIAB is playing. In other words, the recording contains EXACTLY "what the computer hears". For soundblaster, the term "What U Hear" is used. Other soundcards will most likely have a different term.

Note: it should also be possible to get to the Sound preferences from "Control Panel | Sound".
Hope this helps, Noel

Ok, thanks. I agree it must be soundcard setting. I have a RealTec card. I can make it record thru the mic only but then I hear no backing tracks. Maybe this card does not have the ability to monitor during recording while sending only the mic input to the new track.

It sounds like you have ASIO selected as your driver. Double-check that this is MME. It's under "Opt | Preferences | Audio" (See image below.) It's necessary to exit BIAB for any change here to take effect. Also, what's your operating system?

Note, that in Realband, it's possible to use ASIO (I use ASIO4ALL; it's freeware). Under "Audio Set", select the "Audio" tab and double-check that "Full Duplex" is active. Again, it's best to exit and re-start RB for this to take effect.

Regards, Noel

ASIO is a pain in the ...
1 person out of 50 really needs it, it just confuses the rest. Even me. And it's buggy. And everyone says "gee Band in a Box sucks" because it doesn't use ASIO.
Well, here's news. It doesn't drive a Porche either. Never was intended to do it either. Now someone will tell us that all software that's any good runs only on Macs. Thanks.
My imaginary budgie is hosting a birthday party for his friends this afternoon and I'm doing the imaginary work to get ready. Which takes precedence over any ASIO discussion.

Check your Record Properties.
Doubleclisk on the little speaker icon in the taskbar by the clock, when the mixer window opens, select options->Properties and then click on the Record radio button. Check the list that appears, likely there is something besides just the mic input selected. Perhaps "Stereo Mix" or the like, which would be routing both the playback material and the mic to the record console. Select only the Mic to do what you wish at this point in time.
