Hi all,

I was nudeling around on the guitar this morning and came up with a chord progression for a song I'm writing.
But after playing it a few times it sure is starting to sound very familiar to me.
I can't place it though.
Would someone give a listen to a short mp3 file I recorded and see if this tune sounds familiar?

The name of the file is Tim.mp3
The link is:

Thanks much

Sounds good to me -- all chord progressions have been used already before -- just make sure that the melody/lyrics over the top is unique. Write that song and don't worry about it until you are finished.

Ditto to what Kevin said.

If you ever came up with a progression that was truly unique, you would have to color WAY outside the lines and you may not be pleased with the sound of it.

Hi Tim,

Chord changes by themselves are NOT copyrightable. The Melody of a song, and, of course, the lyrics, are what the copyright covers.

There have been many songs that share the same chord changes, not a problem in the legal sense.

That said, your particular thang posted there sounds a bit like something John Denver would have plucked (or any number of fingerpickers)...

Thanks guys for your responses.

I tend to agree with everything that has been said here.
I didn't explain my self very well.
I meant chord progression along with the finger picking pattern I was using.
I know none of that is copyrightable, but I didn't wanna sound too much like a popular song already out there.

What popular song do you think it sounds like?

[G]Don't go around tonight
Its [D]bound to take your life
[A]Theres a [G]bad moon on the [D]rise

BTW: Everything okay? The lyrics of the song... well...

Well actually the name of my song is Bad Shrimp Rising.

Well don't go around tonight
and for sure don't take another bite
'cause there's a bad shrimp on the rise

Lol. Just had shrimp for dinner and it does feel like it's gonna rise.

Kevin, the more I play it it's beginning to sound a bit like Gentle On My Mind.

I often find myself noodling around (for me, on the piano), but I find I get cold when I'm nudeling.

Sorry, couldn't help it, it just made me laugh when I got a mental image. Maybe that's what the singing cowboy in NYC does.

Lol. Hey glad I could make you laugh.
Stick around, I'm sure there's more to come.

Lol. I think I actually had it spelled correctly before running the spell checker, but took it's advice and hit change.
I don't know, they both sounded the same to this blind guy. Lol.

Sorry Tim.... I listened to the wrong song when making my comparison above.

When listenin to the rght one is is a little reminiscent to an acoustic version of "Landslide".

PRearden,

Oh OK, I get the reference to Bad Moon Rising now.
Yeah I guess that tune does sound a little like Bad Moon .
I put that other song I'm Gonna Take her Out Tonight up there for a friend a while back and now can't seem to delete the dam thing. Lol. I've even contacted Charter, but they weren't much help.

Thanks for taking the time to listen and commenting.

I can sing a little bit of "Gentle on my mind" to it, but you veer off quickly. Gentle on my mind is quite a unique melody -- tons of notes against a simple backing -- that you would be hard pressed to plagiarize it. Don't worry about it.

oops -- just watched a glenn campbell video of that song -- they are jamming: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DsqDc3cy7w -- he can really pick, but I don't like that ovation sound.

Sounds a lot like "Everybody's talking at me" at the start to me, but then it takes a turn and loses it. As long as the melody doesn't sound too much like anything particular there is no problem. Mind you with the number of songs around, statistically that could eventually become one.

Thanks.

Yeah that Glenn Campbell can sure play. Wish I could pick like that.
Glen was a session player for quite a few years before he started singing.

It could be difficult to delete the file because you have 4 horizontal tabs in the filename. Also remember Apache commands are case sensitive. open the directory and type

delete file="/%09%09%09%09I%27mGonnaTakeHerOutTonight.mp3"/

the %09 is the horizontal tab and the %27 is the apostrophe.

Chord progression a chromatic A major scale: A - Bm -C#m - D pretty standard like all have said - nothing new here, but it is some nice picking over it.
