Trying to get a glissando effect with a midi Bell Tree patch.

After selecting the note on channel 10, where all the other drums sound are, all I can do is press the key and get a few msec of bells -- when what I need it to do is to slide up or down over the course of half a bar a bar or so.

Come on, you know what I mean...

How are you getting this effect without miking a bell tree and recording it audio?

BellTree is in the standard GM percussion kit as C7, or MIDI note 84.

One hit is a full "gliss" of the BellTree, although it isn't really thought of as a glissando because the thing is indeed a percussion instrument.

You shouldn't be finding any BellTree in a melodic instrument set, likely you are trying to use another instrument altogether.

Sorry, I don't understand, Mac.

Your right I am using the MIDI note 84; it's the only BellTree I'm aware of. The question is how do I get a longer gliss instead of that "one hit." Do you know of a way?

(I inadvertently posted this in the PT Forum instead of the other. I'll put the question there also.)

Thanks.

Ah.

It is a single "full" sample of a recorded belltree in most synths.

Therefore a long slow hit (or a short one) can't really be manipulated via MIDI data, it is what it is.

You might be able to overlap two hits and create an illusion there, but it likely won't be smooth as the Attack of the second hit will still be in there, but maybe masked a bit by the tail of the first hit.

Another option that may work is to search the web for sound samples, there may be a short wav file out there somewhere. Drop it in if you find it and see what it sounds like.

Good suggestions both. I'll try 'em. Thanks.

Yeah, you're gonna have to overlap as Mac suggests as you would on a real bell tree;the only way to prolong the sound is gliss with the two little brass headed mallets
that are supplied with the instrument.
I've managed it in PT,no problem.
David.

Well, in the real world I'd specify use of a longer belltree.

But in the MIDI world we most often are creating illusions anyway.

Found a wave file online that easily maniulable and works great. Good tip.
