Hi el,
Try this:
Under the Options menu in BIAB, select "MIDI/Audio...." and when the window opens, make sure that the Microsoft synth is highlighted in the RH window, even though you have the Use DXi checked down below.
Then check the "Route MIDI Thru..." right below Use DXi and see if you can now hear those things.
