Mac, as usual thanks for the prompt reply. I still can't accomplish the requests in my earlier post. I had previously checked the FAQs and the most promising one was no longer available. Maybe by search is not worded correctly but when I type in tied notes in the help, in the faq, and forum search my results are fruitless. I tried what you suggested but I couldn't get it to work. I could tie into a dotted half in the begining of the second bar from the 4th, then 3rd, then 2nd notes of the first bar ok. When I tried to do it from the first beat of the first bar the tie would only tie to other notes in the first bar. (hopefully this is coherent). What I am trying to do is enter the following:
bar 1 | bar 2 | bar 3
whole note tied to |dotted half qtr note tied to | whole note tied to .....

bar 4
half note qtr note qtr note tied to etc

In regards to removing the bass clef I did try going into Options/pref/notation options/notation settings but I'll be darned if I can figure out how to remove the bass clef in this screen.
Please advise a "slow" learner what the heck I am missing.
