Combinations of different sounds from different synths, hardware or software or mixed, is easy to do in Realband, where you can address different synths simultaneously, but inside Band in a Box, we can only address one MIDI output synth at a time. Therefore it is best to choose a MIDI output device that has a really good sounding GM/GS/GM2 bank so that you can easily play back BIAB songs and hear what they are going to sound like.

I stumbled on this today: http://kellysmusicandcomputers.com/produ...amp;p=-23539372a general MIDI sound module for less than $200 I have no idea how good it might be, but it costs less than many sound modules I've seen on Craig's list. For somebody who wants the low latency that is available from hardware, without the typical high price, this might be something worth considering. (the product description even mentions Band In A Box! as in "can be used with...")

I've never heard of the brand. If you order, be sure it's returnable without a re-stocking fee if it sucks. All General MIDI does is standardize patch numbers to instrument sounds. It does not specify what it should sound like. So one GM sound module might have a sax that sounds like a sax another a sax that sounds like a kazoo. Also look for reviews. It could be great, it could be lame. Brand new 2012.5 updates from Norton Music:- 2 new style disks for Band-in-a-Box

I thought so too, PhillyJazz, but then Youtube can do that to a recording .. plus the ones I saw were playing out of the unit into an amp/speaker, then recorded by camera mic
In theory not the best audio path to judge.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

heyyy, it's German made! Everybody knows that if Germans do anything well, it's manufacturing! It might turn out to be the Mercedes of sound modules!
But, I don't think anybody expects to get a Mercedes for Yugo prices. You get what you pay for. The skill level and professional requirements here on the forum are all over the place. A newbie would probably solve a lot of problems very quickly if he didn't have to deal with latency. And that price isn't a deal killer even for entry level MIDI enthusiasts. After using BIAB for a year, they'd know if they need to change or if it meets their needs.
