I am using line based lyrics in my arrangements. I am lazy and it seems that line based lyrics are easier to enter than note based as you need a melody line and I can just cut and paste with the line based. My question is how (or can I) change the font size of the line based lyrics? I have searched these forums and checked help but can seem to find it. I changed all of the font sizes in Options to 80% but these don't effect the line based lyrics. I would appreciate any help.

I don't think you can change the font size in the line based lyrics available at the top of the Notation Window.

But for Cut and Paste, I would likely use the Big Lyrics window anyway for that, and have it include the Chords as well.

Thanks Mac! The big lyrics window is still somewhat of a mystery to me. I have entered lyrics in the lyrics document window which works ok, but I have not mastered using the big lyrics window for scrolling chords and lyrics. Just inexperience on my part. You know, I would love to devote a 40 hour week to figuring this stuff out. Loving it every step of the way though. BIAB and realband have taken my music to a level I never could never have achieved without it.

(edited: I just noticed you already tried the big lyrics window)

Have you looked at the Lyric Document Window?

It may do just what you want. This is from the 2011 help file:

"The Lyric Document window displays a full screen of formatted lyrics so you can easily copy and paste lyrics to and from your favorite word processor. If you have the lyrics available you can quickly paste them into Band-in-a-Box. These lyrics will show up on the Big Lyrics window, so that they can be seen during playback.

You may already have the lyrics to your song typed into a word processor, nicely formatted with font/color/bold choices etc. Previously, you would need to retype them into Band-in-a-Box and would lose your formatting. Now you can simply Copy/Paste them to/from your word processor. This allows you to quickly add lyrics to any Band-in-a-Box song.

You can open this window by choosing Window | Lyric Document Window, or pressing Ctrl+Alt+Shift+L. In addition, if "Auto-open lyrics window for songs with lyrics" is set to true in the Lyric Window Options dialog (Opt. | Preferences [Big Lyrics]), the Lyric Document Window will open up automatically when the song is loaded, and close when the next song is loaded.

To use the window, type or paste in text from a word processor. You can select fonts and colors as you would in a word processor. Since the data is stored in RTF format, it should look very similar to the appearance it would have in WordPad."

Hey Meg

Yeah, I have experimented with the Lyric document window. It works great as I am able to cut and paste an entire song into it. I can also launch it when the song starts. What I don't like...it takes up too much screen real estate and often the songs are too large to fit on a page without needing an extra hand to scroll down during performance. Dual monitors would eliminate that problem but now I am getting into too much stuff to lug around.
I really like the line based lyrics as they scroll along with the song while its playing. The big lyrics window seem like it would be even better but I still can't figure out how to use it. Do I have to create note based lyrics to see the chords and lyrics in the big lyric window?

The HELP section inside Band in a Box, Under the HELP menu, has a neat way to quickly find specific things like this: Select "Topic Search".

I just did that and typed in "big lyrics" and this is what it says, among other useful things to know when working with the Big Lyrics Window:

Quote:

Note: If a song has lyrics (or other text) in the Lyric Memo or Lyric Document, these lyrics will show up on the Big Lyrics window, so that they can be seen during playback. If you have lyrics in text format, it is easy to paste them in as a Lead Sheet Memo and see them on the Big Lyrics Window as well.

Yes, I had previously followed the instructions in help before I looked to the forum. No luck. I fact I just tried another little test that maybe you could try also. I create a new song with chords on 8 bars. Opened the lead sheet and then the lead sheet memo. Typed in 4 lines of text and clicked OK. Played the song and opened the Big lyrics window. The window shows and scrolls chords but does not display lyrics.

A work-a-round FWIW . . . I split my screen 50/50 with the BIAB "Memo Window" containing my lyrics. And thanks to a personal request to PG Music 3-4 upgrades ago they made the font in the memo window adjustable.

You will find that by splitting the window into two windows, one for the chord chord charts and one for the memo window with lyrics you can fit more lyrics on the screen.

#1. Open BIAB
#2. Open Memo Window
#3. Hold "Windows Logo Key" Down & Click "Right Arrow" Key until both windows are equal size on the screen.

This little tip I picked up on this forum is very helpful for reading my chord charts while simultaneously reading lyrics on live performances.

Hope this helps someone else.

Hello Todd,

Note-based lyrics have more formatting options. Here is a trick if you want to enter note-based lyrics, and you don't happen to have any melody notes.

1. Enter a note - any note - on each beat in bar 1.

2. Go to Edit | Copy from.. to... Copy from bar 1 to bar 2; number of bars to copy = 1; # times to repeat copy = [however many bars your song is].

3. Enter your note-based lyrics

4. Go to Edit | Erase from.. to... Erase from bar 1; # bars to erase = [however many bars your song is]. Uncheck 'Lyrics'.

The lyrics will stay at the position you where you entered them. If you need to correct a typo, you could use the Lyric event list - press the [#] button in the notation window and click [Edit Lyrics].

Hi,

I have this same problem. I'm new to BiaB (have 2012 w/latest patches). I've created a few songs, but only by choosing a style, tempo, and key, and then entering the chord changes. I have not entered any melody in.

Following the instructions above, I opened the Lyric Document Window and pasted in lyrics for one of the songs. At playback, the Big Lyrics window does not open automatically. If I open it myself, I can see the chords following along with the playback. But, it does not show any lyrics.

Is there a tutorial anywhere on all these different ways of keeping up with lyrics? I just want to enter chords and lines of lyrics so, at playback, my singer can see a line of chords and the corresponding line of lyrics. Ideally, actually see several lines at a time, so she'll know what's coming up, as she sings along.

TIA for any help.

Note based lyrics scroll with the music.

If you think about it you paste 10 verses of If I had a hammer into a box. How is it supposed to figure out how to scroll. They spend huge amounts of time and $ in karaoke to make this work. Why is your singer using a screen?

I'm a bit old school but a singer learns lyrics. Period.

If you can get pasted in lyrics to scroll contact someone. You will get rich I think.

Note based lyrics take work.

For 7 songs in a set the notes and words would need 4hours a song.

When you see recording artists doing this it's studio notes. Breath here, louder, softer, punch it, smile (you can hear smiles).

A huge amount of work goes into one set.

Or you needed karaoke, just my opinion.

Okay....

1) I am working with a Nashville recording artist on the music for her next album. Thanks for the karaoke suggestion, but it won't really work for me in this case.

2) I don't know how it's supposed to work. But, since the quoted documentation, from above, says:

"If a song has lyrics (or other text) in the Lyric Memo or Lyric Document, these lyrics will show up on the Big Lyrics window, so that they can be seen during playback"

I was nevertheless expecting to see lyrics in the Big Lyrics window during playback. And, as I said, I didn't. And rather than ask why, or what's wrong, I asked for a pointer to some further documentation or a tutorial on lyrics in general. This is not the only issue with lyrics that doesn't match the documentation that I've found so far.

3) The reason for trying to do what I'm trying to do is, we are arranging and re-arranging songs right now and recording some scratch tracks of the vocals. Telling her to "memorize the lyrics", when the order of things is changing every 5 minutes - and possibly, the lyrics, too, is all fine and dandy. But, it would be a lot easier if she could just see the lyrics on a line basis, above the chords, during playback. Easier than remembering, for example, no, don't start the next verse yet, there's a 4-bar turnaround first - this time.

4) I'd rather just have line based lyrics. But, attempting to do that doesn't seem to match the documentation at all, so that's already a failure for me. E.g. when I press Ctrl-L to do "Enter lyrics at current bar", I get a text box and some buttons labeled "Line", "Para", etc.. that I can't find ANY documentation for. I press Ctrl-L again and that bit goes away. But, then when I type in what are supposed to be line-based lyrics, I still can't ever get them to show anywhere during playback.

So, again, can anybody point me to documentation (that actually matches what's happening on my screen in BiaB 2012) or a tutorial or something that explains all the different ways of entering lyrics and having them displayed during playback?

Thanks.

I size the windows when learning a song. The lyrics window is then beside the scrolling chords, I don't understand the workflow.

If you wrote the song yourself where's the notes?

If it is a cover what is the song?

Some people have multiple monitors.

Mine is 27 inches so there is lots of room. I would put a box off to the side.

I no longer do that as I've lost my voice to cancer and I sort of croak. No one wants to hear me sing except my dog.

Again, the support for this program is second to none. Email them, use live help, call them.

I take it if you have version 2012 you have an on line manual and printed manual.

But the lyrics box is just that, a notepad so to speak. I can be made to open automatically, but in my experience it can end up at the bottom of the screen depending on how the save routine you chose saw the setup.

I'm sure that if this is a deal breaker for you Mr. Gannon will personally ensure your satisfaction. To my knowledge it's always worked that way.

The singer wrote the song. The melody only exists in her head.

I came to NC (from CA) to work with her at her home. So, I am working off my laptop. No dual 24" monitors here, like at home.

And anyway, my point is, BiaB is not working like the documentation says it's supposed to. And it's showing things on the screen that don't seem to be anywhere in the documentation.

At this point, I guess I have to conclude that that's "just the way it is". No, it's not a dealbreak, but it sure is annoying.

The program is rich with features. At 3 posts, and being around for such a short time, I do not understand how you've come to grips with it.

Like any piece of software there are strengths and limitations.

It was meant to provide a back up band for playing along with. I know of no other program that can do what it does at all.

This is the Users forum, not the official support group for pg music. The just provide the space for those who use the software to ask questions and get possible answers.

Most of us know the support people by name. Use that support when you need to get answers.

I, like the others here, are mostly just users of the software.

If you see Peter Gannon (the PG behind pgmusic) or the others jump in once in a while, it will say so on the posting. But it is not meant to ask them questions.

Good Luck.

I just tried a test with my up to date copy of BB 2012.5

Copied some lyrics into the Lyric Document Window to go along with a short 12 bar blues layout.

I hit Options in the Big Lyrics Window first and checked, "Auto-open Lyrics window for songs with lyrics"

Saved the song, then opened a different song and played it for a minute.

Then hit Open and selected this test lyrics song.

When the song opened, the Lyrics Document Window where I pasted those lyrics opened also. Okay, the lyrics are there, BUT they are not in the Big Lyrics window, only the Lyrics Document Window.

Don't know if that is a bug or not at this point, but you could change the Font size in the Lyrics Document Window to make it large enough for her to use and maybe that can get you through...
