What do y’all love, (or hate) about country music?

(Give examples)

I guess the biggest thing I love about country music is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously!

Yes, the humor is wonderful, also in many cases, the STORY.

Okay, ... it was Pat Bentar with Martina McBride!

And the last song you just posted was wonderful! Brad Paisley is a a gifted guitarist and singer. I don't know who wrote the song, but it's great!

I hope others post more.

For this tired old Oyrish Cowboy it's definitely the story. When you combine the talents of Alison Krouss and Brad Paisley telling a story that every heart can relate to it's magic, pure chemistry. Difficult to hold back the tears.

This is a short article from the first of the year that's interesting. It lists the top ten selling artists of the soundscan era - 1991 through 2011. Far ahead and leader of the pack is country star Garth Brooks.

I can't say that I like it all. Between it and Rap, I call it CRAP. Everyone is different and I realize most of them have talent.

I think what mostly puts me off is the way a lot of country singers tried to sound alike back in the day. Now things are a bit different and there is a lot of times when country and rock (my favorite) cross the line.

Just my personal opinion.

It is difficult to tell country from mainstream pop or rock these days. If it comes from Nashville it's country, if it don't it aint?
Basically country music is no different from any other kind of music, or any other kind of product for that matter, 90% ballast, 9% good stuff, and 1% great.

LIKE - Dolly Parton. Well you've just got to, haven't you!

HATE - playing bass in a Jim Reeves cover band. Had to do it once and couldn't stay awake.

It seems these days all the best country music -- or the country music I like, anyway -- is called 'Americana.'

I must say I like it, legends (imo) like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Moe Bandy

Its the only genre where if you play it backwards :

1. You get your wife back
2. You get your job back
3. You get your dog back

I'm doing allright for Country Trash ....

I used to care, but things have changed (Bob Dylan)

The new male artists for the last few years mostly sound alike, and with a severe southern twang. It seems as if the recording companies send them to the same school to teach them to sound like that. I grew up in Texas and rarely heard the kind of twang I hear in today's songs.

I really miss the variety of vocal styles in past decades, guys with unique voices. Singers like Garth Brooks, Marty Robbins, Jim Reeves, Charlie Pride, Gatlin Brothers, Alabama, and Don Williams to name a few.

I grew up with an ear in the radio on Saturday nights, listening to the Opry out of Nashville. So my druthers fit classic country and the older artists. Don't listen to any of the newer artists, since a lot of it has too much grunge guitar and rock styles for my tastes. It doesn't hit my nervous system right. My preference is country music that features the band and instrumentalists over singers. I'd listen all day to western swing, such as The Time Jumpers, Asleep At The Wheel, and similar groups. Jazz-flavored improvisation within a country tune is my favorite type of country music.

I got into country music listening to Slim Whitman ( Who I met briefly when he was in Inverness ), Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, George Jones etc... I love listening to vintage country ( I feature a lot of it on my radio programmes ). I hate most of the modern country stuff that mainstream radio spews out as it's basically country moulded into pop to sell sell sell, nuthin else !

Who awakened the Grizzly Bar?

I am very selective in my choice of a specific genre. Actually, I don't have a favorite genre but C&W probably comes closest to my roots. I cherry-pick across an ever-widening range of musical interests, thanks to BIAB's User Showcase. You might be surprised to learn the vast number of Julliard graduates who have chosen C&W for it's freedom of musical expression.
