I got a new computer. Its a HP Pavilions p6-2100. I kinda like it, but when I tried to move some cards from the old machine to the new one they would not fit.

I pulled the SB Audigy from the old machine. There was only one PCI slot in the new machine, and it looked like the right size. But there is a physical mismatch of just a couple milimeters. It looked like it ought to fit, but just barely failed to line up, pins-to-sockets. There an alignment stub in the slot, and that failed to fit a notch on the card by a similar amount. Similar results when I tried to move a memory stick.

I came pretty close to forcing the card in, and looked very closely, but I couldn't quite see where the misfit was. Any ideas?

The old machine was XP and the new one is Win 7.

That part wouldn't matter at all.

Are you familiar with PCI Express slots?

That's probably what you have.

The alignment "stub", called the key, is what differentiates 3.3v cards from 5v cards.

PCI Express is the correct answer to your question. The newer wave of motherboards has a slightly different form factor and your old card may not (and obviously does not) fit. My last new compute, AND the one I built myself, both have only 1 conventional PCI slot, and I used that for my dual head video card in both of those systems because nerd boy has to have dual monitors.

Another example of why I hate onboard cards vs outboard. A nice M-Audio Fast Track Pro would cure all your ills.

See how the keys are in different places?

Eddie,

That's why I made sure my relatively new 'puter has a mobo that has extra PCI and PCI Express slots.

Then I can plug in my old stuff and new stuff.

Don't know where you got the "doesn't fit" part, but google Soundblaster, Audigy, or whatever..., and check them against the mobo.

They all fit.

Aarrgghhh! Is it "Talk Like A Pirate Day" yet?

Hey Guys! The OP was flatfoot. You guys are discussing stuff without him being in the conversation....just saying'....

That is a great inside pic, Eddie. I don't have any card slot problems, but since I'm a visual learner, pics are my buddies.

I often use association .. like the 'e' of PCIe I associate with the coomon 'end' clip on the board. But I always investigate what I'm getting before I buy. Don't take PCI slots for granted anymore. They are often not included. I would really miss my PCI slots at this point in time.

But, yeah; nice graphic Eddie

Yes, I'm sitting here with a Firewire control surface/sound module. Remember Firewire? And, my Firewire is implemented on a PCI card... Plus, Tascam has already announced it will issue no more drivers, so our small user community is hoping the Windows 7 drivers work in Windows 8.

For generalists, who want to use computers to do web surfing and word processing, this doesn't matter as much, but for those of us who specialize (pro audio in our case), hardware, software and standards obsolescence becomes a problem all too frequently.

The only way you'll get an empty PCI slot anymore is if you build a PC yourself or you custom order a PC, (which is cheaper), with a MOBO that has extra PCI slots. That's why I custom ordered mine and spec'd the MOBO.

So, back to flatfoot, ... as I said in the first reply, you probably have a PCI Express slot.

Check the pic Eddie posted to confirm it.

Yes I had the same problem when I updated to a new HP Pavilion last year. In the end I fitted a new Soundcard as my Audigy Card was 6 years old.

I actually ran into a customer a few years back who wanted to use his high end ATI video card in his new half high desktop case, and (I swear this is true) when he found it was too big he took it to his work shop and CUT IT DOWN WITH A BAND SAW!!!! And when it didn't work, his first call was to ATI!

Some people really just do need to be slapped.
