When I finished and saved my weekly devotional, I hit the space bar for no particular reason and the file disappeared. I was using the Microsoft Works Word processor. 15,OOO KB were showing in the filelist, but I couldn't open the file. I then opened Open Office and the same thing happened again, except that I could bring it back with Ctrl-Z.

I finally finished the file by saving and renaming the file about 8 times, but it didn't happen again. I had forgotten that I had to retype the devotional last week, also.

Anyone have any ideas?

If the file's contents were highlighted when you pressed the spacebar, they would disappear and could be retrieved by Ctrl+Z. Could that be what happened?

No, I don't think so.

Thanks for answering.

If the entire thing was highlighted (ctrl-a, select all) and you hit the Spacebar, the whole thing would have been replaced with a single space.

But the Saved file could have been reopened or an Undo should have brought things back as well.

Other than that, I dunno. As we say outside of church, "Feces Occurs" mah man.

Yes, that is what happened on in Microsoft Works Word. However, the saved file would not open.

When I opened Open Office, the un-highlighted text was deleted by hitting the space bar and was brought back by control-Z. This happened a couple times and then quit.

As you say, "Stuff happens," but I hate to work 2 or 3 hours on a file and then have to repeat it. It's like preaching the same sermon twice on Sunday.

Other Don,

MS Works WP is very flaky, refusing to open larger documents, etc. After losing several entire documents, I switched to Open Office, the open source suite, and haven't looked back. It even allows exporting in .pdf format that my Dynavox will then read aloud.

Original Don,

Yes, a Google search showed that I wasn't the only one with this problem.

I understand about deleted a select text with the space bar and having it replaced with a 1 character document. But I can't understand why I can't bring up the previously saved file. I didn't see an answer for that in Google either.

Click the Office button in upper left, then look at bottom for Word Options
Select the Save option and check your settings here.
You may have it set to auto-save every so often and thus overwrite the saved copy.

Going from memory so hope the path is close..

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Open Office has an excellent RESTORE feature that has saved my bacon countless times. It has a wee bit o' a learning curve but it's fairly intuitive and will open M$ Word documents, Excel Spreadsheets, .pdf files, etc. Since it's open source, it's free and constantly being improved upon.

I had problems with M$ Media Player crashing until I downloaded the free version of MediaMonkey (qv) and haven't had a crash since. No more: "Windows Media Player has stopped working..." errors and MM has several cool features that I haven't found in WMP.

Or maybe spend some money and get REAL Microsoft Office. It is MUCH more stable than the free knockoff Microsoft Works. Sometimes you gotsta spend it to make it.

Open Office comes with some big benefits and a few drawbacks. For me I'd rather have MS Office, but when in need Open Office has indeed been a good alternative at times.
Just trying to help OP solve his problem.
In my experience Open Office opens most word files and edits thm fine .. but I have seen issues where the saved doc didn't open on the other end correctly when converted back to MS Office. So it depends a bit on needs.

Rharv, I experienced that exact problem this past Friday. OO saved a Word document in a newer format than the recipient's copy of MS Word and, consequently, she couldn't open it until I re-sent it in an older Word format. OO will emulate most Word documents but it requires knowing which version of Word the recipient is running.

If you left the document where the text disappeared open and then tried to open a file of the same name, it likely would not open because there was already a file of the same name open and being edited...

Thanks for all the input. I can't explain it all, but I've got a pretty good idea how I caused the problem.

As to the file list showing 15KB but not opening. I opened it in Wordpad and saw a whole lot of garbage, with just a short paragraph of recognizable text.

It all boils down to when the little box ask whether you want to save your changes, it's best to say no.

As Forrest Gump said, "Stupid is as stupid does."

On a brighter note, The new Strat and Blue microphone that I won in the Westone Sweepstakes will be arriving in the next few days. I've dug out the old Gretsch to see just how badly I've slipped. You wouldn't want to know.

What is this "Gretsch" of which you speak? Enquiring minds, and all that.

My particular model is a 1967 Chet Atkins Tennessean. I tried to upload a picture but got a message about not having permission to view it. So I gave up.

Other Don, that exact guitar is listed on eBay for $3,995.00! Is yours red or natural? Beautiful instrument in either event. Do you have the original hard case?

Mine is Red. I don't have the original case. My late brother-in-law who was a studio musician in Nashville always seemed to have guitars on hand that somebody probably sold for bus fare out of town. If I remember right, I paid $75.00 for it and $100.00 for a Peavy practice amp. Looks like the guitar was the better value.

I also got a Fender Duo-Sonic for $75.00 from a guy who was in Charlie Pride's band. It's easy to play, but I've never liked the tone.

Lastly I have a 1952 Martin 0028 that I bought in 53 and wish I had taken better care of it.

With the new Strat coming, I'll have 4 guitars which are seldom played.

I told Mrs. Curmudgeon that the kids could draw straws for them when I kick off.
