I hear MIDI orchestras, world instruments, matter of fact, ALL instruments in movie soundtracks all the time.

Most are good sounding enough to fool almost everybody, including symphony musicians...

MIDI is not dead, nor is it dying.

M musical
I insrument
D digital
I interface

The new version must embed itself to operate all aspects of a performance.

For now the manufacturers are not in agreement.
The local digital music prof told me the experimental version has codes for "old midi packet", then I'd numbers for each device, ie
Light ser # xxxxx red 1 half power, fog Mach # x haze xsecs , open xy, on Ethernet.

It should thus allow control of sounds at the door ie chime a tone or song, unlatch, swing open, cue this and that, with codes to allow better control of midi.

If you use the present digital interface for say a light running plasa and then imagine a cross with midi packets you sort of have it.

But 3 pin dmx will go soon too.

I bet a new group of net cable to midi translaters will help over the hump.

Being nostalgic about kerosene lanterns when the new high faultin 10 amp service shows up just meant old folks couldn't read after sundown.

I'll take electricity, at my cabin though the 50k bill to get it means go to sleep at sundown. Fish harder as the days get shorter and pickle some fish for winter.

Plasa is the future dmx, cable or wireless, time code based if I remember.

Everything dies and evolves. I was studious but my son got a Phd. I loved travel and the uk. My daughter moved there. I loved music and my son won piping awards and toured with a band. I loved uniforms a and 2kids served. Must have rubbed off.

But I hate karaoke!

Imagine wireless midi for multiple devices.

Hack, hack, gee who turned out the lights? Put down that phone son and turn off the dub step.

Sure the older modules have some dated sounds on them

Notes, I love the term “dated sounds”! I have had a number of friends get rid of hard synths because they said they had dated sounds. What are dated sounds?

If dated sounds are so bad then why are there still acoustic instruments?

If dated sounds are so bad then why are synthesizers turning into acoustic emulators?

If dated sounds are so bad how come sometimes an eight-bit patch sounds better than a twenty-four-bit patch in a mix?

Inquiring minds want to know

Mountainside, there's a thread on the Sonikmatter Kurzweil forum on this exact subject. The new keyboards like my Kurz PC3 do such a good job of emulating all the old classic analog keyboards, do you really need to keep them? The answer is purely personal. If you're the type who just has to have that perfect classic patch for one of your songs then keep those old Oberheims but short of that the new keyboards run circles around that old stuff. There's a couple of guys over there who will wax poetic about how new keyboards can't quite capture that perfect sound but everybody else including me thinks "who cares"? Most of the high end keyboards including mine have Virtual Analog (VA) synthesis on board and sound great. Even if somebody were to do a direct side by side comparison and hear some slight difference it's still "who cares"?

Notes, just mho, you sould sell all that stuff and get one of the new super keyboards. My Kurz is a candidate along with the Kronos. Both are fully capable of getting so squeakingly close to any classic old sound you can name you would never notice any difference in a mix and then when you start talking about full orchestrations, and any other instrument you can name, both are just stellar. Imo. Yes it's a lot of money but you're replacing all that stuff with one great keyboard, self contained, all the latest and greatest with killer update support from their respective companies.

I recently got an Integra-7. It really is a great sounding module, especially the new SuperNatural sounds. Best acoustic sounds I have heard in a hardware sound module, and better than most software synths I have heard. I created a BIAB PAT file using the SONAR definition file from the Cakewalk website, and emailed it to PGmusic, so it should appear on the website soon.

That Integra-7 sounds great! Even better if you can make a complete .PAT file from the Cakewalk .INS file.

As the unit has all 12 of the expansion modules for the Fantom line that this replaces, perhaps your .PAT file will even be useful for someone with a Fantom. I will know when I read the code.

Well I was around back then. I still see Midi fading away.

The next version will perhaps have backwards compatibility for some things, but the need to use embedded codes to run other devices will find us with an audio stream using some sort of transport protocol.

It depends on what kind of music you play. If you play pop music, jazz, country, blues, yes MIDI is not necessary. You can play all that music with adequate RT in BIAB.
But if you are involved in classical music, where you have to write down every note for every instrument, MIDI is the only way to go.
So, we, BIAB users, whe have to learn to not be so categorical.

Good points John-Luke.

You also need midi for new age, ambient, trance, dance, etc. Midi is still the way to accurately play exact jazz, country, blues, rock and etc covers.

If you want to write down every note for the above examples you could still use midi. Even with some RealTracks the notes can be written via RealCharts, which is midi.

Great to hear from ya, GDaddy.

Here's an early HAPPY BIRTHDAY to ya!

I know that whatever celebration you do will be straightahead.

Okay, you take the first solo of Scrapple from the Apple with that Jews Harp, take a plate, fill it up, bring it right back.
