My goal here is to add a strings track to a RB song. I am using DSK strings VST add-in. I can't pinpoint the task in help but I am guessing I need to add a midi track to the song to be able to assign the VST to it?
Anyone got some suggestions on the procedure to do this. I originally created the song in BIAB but again could not figure out how to add an additional midi track there either.

I'm using 2012.5 so I don't know if the older versions differ for what you want. You can change an audio track to midi and vice versa. I recently got Garritan personal orchestra. I had a Biab song with strings in the style, but wanted to use the Garritan strings instead. So I set up a blank midi track for the Aria vst and selected the strings I wanted. Then I copied the midi strings track to the Aria track. To mix just mute the tracks you don't want. Others, who a refer to as gurus, might have a better answer.

Not sure just how much info you need and how much you already know.
If you're wanting to know how to assign the DSK strings, then go to the TRACKS window and right click on the next available blank track. From the drop-down menu, select SPECIFIC VSTi/DXi SYNTH FOR MIDI TRACK. This will give you a list of the available instruments. If this is the first time you've used DSK and you don't see it listed, select ADD VSTi PLUGIN and then add the DSK Strings from the folder where you stored it.
This sets up the track ready for the MIDI data to be written or copied.
Hope this isn't just duplicating what you were doing anyway.

Actually I'm guessing you need to highlite an empty track then right-click under the track name and select 'Track Type' then change the flyout from audio to MIDI.
With what you asked, there are many possible correct answers. Tell us more on the specific need. If it's just having a MIDI track to work with, use my suggestion above.

I figured SOMETHING out but it seems a bit awkward.
I went back to BIAB and right clicked the Melody patch on the mixer and chose "Custom Midi style". I chose the style that matched the style I used in the song picked strings as the "from track" dropdown. I then loaded DSK strings as the plugin and generated the song. Then imported the song back into RB and generated and I have a strings track that I can successfully change the strings to my liking. I couldn't seem to find the equivalent steps to do this directly in RB.
