Hi earl,

If all you desire is just pickup notes, they can be added to the Melody or Soloist track by placing them in the bar *Before* the 1st bar starts in the Notation View.

One can also Record MIDI in this fashion, by simply p;laying the pickup notes at the right time during the Countin, as well.
