Dear Seasoned Biab Users --

Please help.

I cannot change the melody patch because it reverts on run, for some MGU songs.

How can I get my patch setting to save and stick with the MGU file, and avoid the revertting???

Here is an example of what happens on some of the MGU files that I have found and downloaded from around the internet.

I load the MGU file.

I go to the Mixer.

I go to the Patches.

I click on the current Melody patch setting, which is "Instrument: 5 Electric Piano", the "old-setting".

I choose "Select MIDI patch".

I choose "Vibes".

Now the patch setting says "Instrument: 12 Vibes", which is the new setting and what I want, the "new-setting".

I play the song.

Before starting, the patch changes back to the "old-setting".

:-(

How can this be fixed?

Please advise.

(I have tried changing the style setting, saving a new version of the MGU file, all to no avail.)

Thanks.

There are songs available on the net that have embedded commands to set the patch.

You can use F5 to check and maybe see the setting. Another method is to use F5 to test this, and if all else fails, use F5 to set the patch on bar 2. If this works there is an embedded command.

Now I'm not in front of my music computer but there are settings that permit you to override this behaviour. Someone else will chime in (so to speak what patch is chimes?) and help you some more.

As you will find, the program is rich in features, and at times it can be frustrating to learn and discover them when you are trying to work on your song.

The advice here would be if the setting works on a 4 bar test song with a few chords, it's just something in the software that is not apparent to you at this point in time.

Keep up the work, it gets easier as you go!

Bonne chance as we say north up from the 49th eh?

This is one thing that I've had problems with also. It used to drive me nuts when I would try to change the melody patch in the style list window. The green SEQ button might work for you. However. I've started just going to the events list and making any changes/additions there. The events list is accessed from the notation window via the # sign. I suggest you also read the Help section on Events List. Good Luck!

Dear John --

Thank you for the tip.

I did as you recommended, more or less, as follows.

I went to Bar 1, I right-clicked, then I choose...
> Bar Settings,
> Patch Changes At This Bar,
> Melody,
> 12 Vibes
> OK

And that works for me as a workaround.

The melody patch is still set automatically to "5 Electric Piano" at the moment that I press "Play", and then the song starts generating the tracks, then when it actually starts to play though the speakers, the melody patch is set to "5 Vibes" (and stays that way for the whole song), which is exactly what I want.

That works for now and this is the only tune that I need this for right now.

I would still like to know why the auto-set-melody-patch-at-play is happening.

I would still like to know how to change the auto-set-melody-patch-at-play setting.

But, until some expert explains this, the workaround is fine.

Thanks.

Mark, if you could post the file on the web somewhere, I (and I'm sure others) would be happy to take a look at it and see if there is a way to figure out how to solve your problem.

Hi Mark,

That is happening because a MIDI file is simply a string of commands laid out along a timeline. MIDI is basically a State Machine concept.

There was (is) already a Patch command at the beginning of that file on that track.

When you change the command to a different Patch, the program cannot automatically erase or delete the *original* Patch command, it just inserts a new one on the timeline, typically doing so AFTER the first command.

So we start the Transport rolling and the first, original command is what you see.

Then, a bit further down the timeline, your inserted command takes place, and that changes the Patch data to the one you desire.

There is a way to change this, and that is done via the Event List. You can find the original Patch command for that track, located before your inserted Patch command -- and delete the original line. Then, when the song is opened or started, only your changed Patch command will show up.

In BiaB, there may be another way to do this as well, the "Save Song with Patches and Harmony" window, where, if you check the tracks involved on the left side after the song has played through to your Patch changes, then Save the songfile from there, it should open with just your chosen Patch changes.

Yeah, the Events List. Like Mac and I said. That will do it for sure!
