While the Band in a Box program itself does not need to write to the registry at install, bbw.exe being a totally standalone program, there ARE a few things that MUST be installed to the Windows Registry in order to use BB from either a portable USB drive or a USB stick. These are the Fonts, the DirectX plugins and any DXi synths that you may need to install.

However, if you invoke the BB Installer from the hard drive package after plugging into the machine, there is an option in the Installer dialog that will allow you to install just those things and not the entire shebang.

Once that is accomplished, that particular machine will not have a large amount of data installed to its C drive, but will have those three critical resources ready when you run BB from the stick or drive.

If you don't install those, the most critical would likely be the Fonts. Without the fonts, you likely won't be able to display the Chord symbols or Notation in BB. Of course, hving a DXi synth installed may also be critical as well, for the DXi synth is used for fast "Rendering" of a BB song to Audio .wav, .mp3, .wma, etc.
