I didn't want to hijack Don's post, but it gave me an idea to ask about what others might actually be using their USB ports for: I'll start this off with the limited usb music stuff that I have:

UA-4fx Sound Module (needed for Ketron SD2)

Alesis Q25 midi controller keyboard

Akai EWI USB wind controller (Works with Real Band, but I can't seem to hear my self playing while recording.)

ASUS Xonar U3 Mobile Headphone Amp Soundcard I use this with the netbook because it's soundcard/(or maybe onboard speakers) suck. However the output quality and gain are really improved with this little gadget. Just plug in the 1/8th jack. It's just slightly wider than a flashdrive.

Hope y'all will share with us. Thanks.

I still have three USB 3 ports available on the front and four on the back

My music computer is pretty minimal, because it isn't connected to the internet so I can run it without anti-virus software. Other than the qwerty keyboard and mouse, there's just the Alesis Q49 Keyboard.

My internet machine has a USB wireless internet receiver and a USB digital TV decoder as well as keyboard and mouse, plus external USB storage for back-up.

My music computer is not attached to the internet and I either attach a Line6 UX2 for use as the soundcard, guitar input and authorisation of the lines 6 VST amp modelling and then use a M Audio 61 as an USB keyboard.
Or I use a Line6 KB37 for recording the vocals as it has a phantom 48volt supply for my Rhode NT2 mic.It also has a 2 1/2 octave keyboard which I use, via a vst, as a reference tone for my harmonies. Then back to the UX2 for mixing.
I also have a midi to USB convertor so I can run my Yamaha KX5 controller as it has a ribbon strip, rather than a pitchbend wheel so I can record a more accurate, to me, imitation of "pull-offs" hammers, partial bends etc for my "non guitar" solos.
I have BIAB installed on my secondary drive but sometimes use the hard drive that came with BIAB 2011.
I also have a massive USB drive for storage of the songs. And the USB Dongle for Cubase

I have a line 6 modelling guitar and have the Line6 workbench connected, when needed, by USB to my "Internet computer" This is because I cannot run 2 LIne 6 products on the same computer at the same time but now I can "change the guitars" via the workbench whilst still having the amps and effects of the UX2.

All that is normally attached to my Internet computer is my USB printer and Logitech Web cam for Skype.

USB TIP:

If you have more than a couple of USB devices, it is often a very good idea to invest in a Powered USB Hub device, one that has its own separate wallwart power supply, and leave those devices attached to the hub. Especially good for laptop users, where you can simply remove or replace the one USB cable to the puter and disconnect or connect all those devices at one point.

Even if you don't use a laptop, the powered usb hub can be a treat with many fullsize PCs, simply because it does not rely on the PC power supply to run the USB devices. For example, you are far less likely to run into the rather common "not enough power to run this device" problem, or have to resort to one of those dual cables that tie up two USB ports in order to get enough power from the mobo to run the device properly.

Another USB tip

If you have PCI slot(s) available in your desktop computer you could purchase a PCI to USB card for under $20 USD. You can get either USB 2 or 3. I prefer these to powered USB, hubs because you need fewer AC outlets and they don’t clutter your work area. However both methods work fine.

Another one to add at Mario's suggestion (in additon to the EWI USB). How about an Akai MDP18 pad controller?
