Try visiting Prefs -> Audio and locate the "Quick Volume Change" toggle about halfway down on the RH side.
Now here's the thing: You should try it both ways, because it depends upon your particular system as to which selection works the fastest. For example, on mine, having that UNchecked actually makes the mixer faster.
