Hi,
i'd be grateful for a little guidance from all you technically minded folk.
My music studio PC (a 6 year old machine running XP SP3) is not booting into Windows.
It merely cycles from off to the bios flash screen.
I have not tried all that much so far, not being particularly computer literate, but I have:
- reset the bios to factory defaults
- launched a version of Ubuntu to see if my internal hard drive is recognised. It is.
- noted that it is not appear to be a power unit problem as the PC is quite happy in Ubuntu or working through other CD-based utility systems
How best to troubleshoot the problem?
I do have an image backup made not so very long ago. Would it make more sense simply to try to restore from this?
I do have the original Windows CD, but do not feel all that comfortable in the recovery console.

I am not great at this too, but, preuming you cant use safe mode (as you cant reach it) then you need a Win boot up disk. Once you boot from the disk you can then try diagnosing. You may need to change the disk load up priority in the BIOS.

Marc, it's just possible that your BIOS backup battery (Brit: pile) is dead. That's the one on the MOBO that looks like a coin, about 1-1/2 inches in diameter. It's dying throws creates symptoms similar to those you describe. It's a rare occurrence - I have only had one die in all my years on PCs but the symptoms were very similar to yours. It's an inexpensive test to try, under a Quid.

Yes, the backup cmos battery *might* be borderline here. Ubuntu may not tax things as much as Windoze can. But if you can boot into Ubuntu *every time* then I would not suspect CMOS battery as being the problem here. There are also virus/malwares out there that exhibit these very symptoms. Sounds like the CMOS battery to me as well. They normally last 5-ish years.

Well I changed the battery and it wasn't that.
I have restored from an (out of date) image backup and the machine seems quite happy to restart now.
Taking me an age to re-build the machine, though.
If the problem reoccurs then I would begin to suspect the hard drive.

As I stated above, I didn't think it could be the bios battery.
After all, the other OS uses the same BIOS as Windows does.
