Can someone please let me know what a typical setup is for recording audio tracks like vocal, guitar, keyboard (non midi) into Band in a Box. I tried just going straight into the 1/8" line in on my laptop but the sound quality was definitely distorted and not very good.
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,
I recommend that you look into the selection and purchase of a USB Audio input/output device (formerly known as a "sound card") for use with your laptop, Band in a Box and other recording programs such as the included RealBand, a device that has a Microphone Preamp in it that can also handle Direct Connection of Instruments such as electric guitars or keyboards as well.
The sound devices built into PC laptops can be made to work, but are typically best used for Playback rather than recording. There are many reasons for that, the noise inherent in the built in recording facilities is not good for music making, being tailored mostly for speech work, the Inputs available do not have the necessary Impedance matching for your various different sources, and the Gain, although available and usable by the true techno-geeks such as myself, is another problem for the person who just wants to get their music into the computer without resorting to jumping thru all those proverbial hoops of fire.
M-Audio, TASCAM, the very fine devices made by Presonus, etc.
I'm sure others will be checking into this thread with recommendations as to exact brands and models they are using with BB -- and how well such works with the program, ease of use, etc. so stay tuned.
Meanwhile, you could take a sec to tell us the exact laptop brand and model, which OS system you are rumning, because that may have a considerable impact on selection of the proper input device for you.

Harrellb,I dont want to hijack your thread but your question was one I was wondering about also, and may help you and I both. I have a multi-effects pedal with a usb which I can record directly into the computer, digitally with no distortion, sounds great, into a program called Mixcraft, it is a trial version. My question is how do I get BIAB 2012 to see my Digitech USB like Mixcraft does? Mixcraft is a fraction of BIAB as far as options, features and everything.

Plug the Digi USB into the puter first, let the OS recognize it, then start up Band in a Box.
Under the Options menu, select MIDI/Audio... and in the new window that opens hit the Audio button and peruse the list of Audio Inputs and Outputs to see if your Digi is listed there, it should be. Select it for Input and for Output if desired as well, by highlighting its name in the windows with a mouseclick.

Thanks for the quick response Mac, Bill, I have the rp155 its a low end pedal but perfect for me as I do not play out anywhere. It may or may not be what you need, but it gets you the ability for digital input and effects for about $90 . Thanks again.

I believe I've used that pedal before, and it *may* require that you have the software for it installed. I think on one of the rp units it was the only way I could find to set the USB as MIDI, audio or digital (for the PC editor).
Did a search; yep that's it, the 155.
Of course that may have been because I just couldn't figure it out otherwise ..
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

Well, if the thing needs its own drivers installed, that comes first.

+1 on the focusrite. Its one company who actually make their own drivers. Most companies just adapt a generic one (including all those mentioned above).

I have to ask, into the laptop with what? A mic? Guitar? Guitar & amp / pedal?
Most laptops only have n type of audio input, 99% of the time a Mic input. That means that it is possible that the mic software has it's pre-amp activated and / or is up too high. And those controls are in different places depending on your OS type & version...
i5 3.20GHz, 32gb RAM, 1tb SSD OS, 12tb HDD, 4gb gForce vid card, 32" monitor, Audient id44, Win10 x64, BiaB/RB 2023, Reaper 6,IK Multimedia Total Studio 3.5 MAX, Waves 10
