Any of you ever done a remake of an old song a TOTALLY took it somewhere it was never intended to go? I am working on some stuff now that will make people say "You are TRULY crazy to do that". But ya know what? It's my project and I can do whatever I want, right?

What are some examples of you doing that?

Anyone?

Beuhler?

In one band we had songs prepared for when the punters yelled for us to do stuff by certain bands that we didnt want to play. The one that caused the most controversy LOL was Brain Damage off Dark Side of the Moon, by Pink FLoyd as an uptempo strumming type song, the chords fitted perfectly and the Floyd purists in the usually small audience used to slow hand clap and boo...success!!! "HI HO Silver Lining" by Jeff Beck as a ballad was another more often played adaption.

Is this what you meant, Eddie?

Hi Eddie. Yeah, it's great fun doing that.

Did a version of Thin Lizzie's "Dancing in the Moonlight" once. Took the tempo down to 96bpm, put in a 12 string rhythm more resembling The Byrds and a lead guitar that could have come from "Sultans of Swing".

I loved it, but the Thin Lizzie fans are still hunting me down all these years later. I remember when Rolf Harris did a version of "Stairway to Heaven" and started receiving death threats from Zep fans.

This pastime has it's drawbacks!

I once did "Brick in the Wall" as a jazzy/bossa tune. Got major guffaws from the crowd.

A local band recorded a bluegrass version of The Police's "Every Breath you Take" - very fast with lost of banjo pickin'. Sounded great!

I always thought that if you played BonJovi covers in a bluegrass style, you could call it..

I was at a local bluegrass festival when a new band from Virginia closed with "Help Me Dear Doctor" by the Stones. They had done a great set in the traditional style. It seemed to me a logical turn to venture into some new territory. They did a respectful and creative version of the Stones song on acoustic instruments. I loved it, but I might have been the only one. I heard lots of complaints from other audience members.

I have not heard from this band since.

One thing that I saw that REALLY worked was the Blind Boys of Alabama singing Amazing Grace to the rhythm and chord progression of House of the Rising Son. In fact, I liked it so much that I do it at church with my band (and nobody gets upset!).

Pat, you got me cracking up! I just got an image of a hair band playing jugs, mandolins, and banjos! Now that would be pushing the envelope.

Oh, I almost forgot, an acoustic guitarist using a talkbox!

I played Amazing Grace last week using my talkbox. The rhythm was in a funk mode. It is a timeless lyric whose message can come across any generation!

Eddie, all this chatter from you recently regarding "covers". Have you converted over to the dark side and now joinded us in finding the joy of doing cover tunes?

And on that note I can add, the majority of my remakes can be considered "strange", unfortuantley that ain't always a good thing.

I don't consider them cover. A remake that changes the rhythm or style is quite different than copying the record note for note. I can't tell you how much I have heard "That's not how it is on the record. On the record they play two 16th notes and you are playing one 8th note!!" at rehearsals over the years. I am trying to imagine someone in the crowd saying "These guys are awful! Did you HEAR that? They played an 1/8th note and the record had two 1/16th notes!! I can't believe they did that!! I am NEVER going to see them again!!!" MOST copy bands are THAT anal about copying. Yet they say "We don't do stuff exactly like the record."

What I am in the "just starting" phase of doing is going to see a Motown classic done as a country waltz, another done as reggae, another done as a heavy rock song.... it's more of a fun project for me than anything. Kind of like taking apart a model airplane and putting the same parts together and coming up with a truck. 95% of everybody who would hear it will hate it. But once again, I have never colored inside the lines, and I'm not likely to start now.
