If your system drive is fragmented, that can affect the loading of RealTracks time even if the entire program is on an outrigger drive. At least, I found that to be the case here. I think it is because the RealTracks load up onto the system drive and are played from that Temp folder.

I just saw that the Asus Eee 1004DN Netbook has a cd/dvd drive. I may wait till that comes out.

Thanks again for all the info and input

How about an Archos?

http://www.archos.com/products/nb/archos_10/index.html?country=us&lang=en

For $329, with the 3 cell battery pack, $349 with the six cell (additional 6 cell battery packs $60), it gives you an Intel Atom 1.6GHz CPU, 1 GB of RAM, 160 GB hard drive, 3 usb ports, WiFi, etc.

Not really a bad buy, with a 10" screen. The biggest issue is that the screen is only like 1024x600, which might cramp your style. Of course, I have no idea what the output is going to sound like, but it does have a Realtek chipset.

Was killing time at lunch and thought I’d check out these new fangled netbooks for travel (which is 80% of my job) - my job does require HIGH end desktop performance for our analytic apps and 3-D graphics apps but there are lots of one-night “side trips” where I just need to be able to check email and kill time or touch up a PowerPoint of Word doc and the Blackberry just won’t cut it but a net book might.

Then I got to thinking could I run some of my music SW on it?
And I come here to the forums and you guys already answered the question! So thanks

(now I just to go buy one and dedicate one of my 500GB WD Passports (now they have 1TB!) for BIAB/RB/RT/RD duty!)

Yes, a typical netBook can run Band-in-a-Box 2009.5, including the RealTracks/Drums.

The typical netbook has better operation than the PC that I use to program BB. That's a 3.5 year old HP notebook Turion 64 1GB RAM. I should getta new one, but I like this old one.

Have Fun!

Any thoughts on the Realtek audio in/out for these netbooks, how does this rank with other sound cards for desktops?.
I guess a usb midi in/out for that part of the system.

On par with any of the built in soundcards, which means so-so recording fidelity as compared to a good aftermarket solution and pretty darn good playback because today's laptops are designed for the main customer base, which means emphasis on DVDs, movies, etc. The earphone jack as line out to PA system works very well indeed.

Yes indeedy!

Several people have reported great results with these little laptops and BIAB here. I bought a little pink Acer for the wife, but tried BIAB running from the pgmusic USB drive on it before giving it over to her, everything worked fine including the realtracks/realdrums, now I am thinking about picking up one for myself, but I think I want it in black...

I followed this further and for about $125=$200 an external USB midi/audio box would give 24 bit audio input if needed. Tascam and others have a wide range products, if one did not use the onboard sound system.
Hmmmm, this is looking better all the time. A netbook w/sd card with or with out the usb ext audio is starting to look like a Christmas present

Be advised that BIAB can only currently run at 16/44.1 though.

RealBand is another story.

As one who years ago effectively ran DOS WordPerfect on a Toshiba T1000 single floppy no hard drive laptop, I'm hoping to see BIAB for Blackberry.
