Anybody out there a fan of John Scofield?
Although I mostly do classic rock and some country I really like to broaden my horizons by listening to some of the greats like Joe Pass, Scofield, Matheny, etc. I find I am able to add some really interesting elements to my playing by studying these guys.
But back to Scofield, of them all, he seems to have a very unusual sense of phrasing, timing and overall virtuosity. I was listening closely to some of his work with the late saxophonist Bob Franceschini.
Scofield is playing harmony and sometimes unison with the sax riffs and his ability to blend his guitar lines so seamlessly with the sax amazes me.
Along these lines, do you guys find that you often cross your musical "boundaries" to learn from other genres?
I think that I (we) sometimes tend to get stuck in our comfort zones. I know many in these forums are jazz players. Do you jazz guys ever listen to something you may not really care for just to pick up a line here and there you may be able to use? It is certainly no revelation, but every genre has many exceptional players.
Anyway, I am fortunate that music is a big part of my life and there is never an end point for listening, studying, practicing and performing.
